Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Review
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Review
The excitement caused by the revival of the Star Wars saga in 2015, was slightly asleep. Production is put on stream, premieres are planned for 5 years ahead. In such a situation, to surprise the viewer, the new "Star Wars" is not enough to just be a good film, you need something incredible. Let's see if there's anything in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
In general, Lucasfilm and Disney managed to do the impossible, showing in the trailer of the picture all the main plot points, but without zaspoyleriv plot. Many quite clearly interpreted promo frames are actually no more than a trap, in the movie almost everything is completely different from what you might think on the video. Moreover, the script writers have reserved some cunning plot twists for the audience, some of which, despite numerous clues, are not even read. And it would be nice if Star Wars: The Last Jedi was not virtually literally replicated Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
Two years ago, when Disney turned the similar trick from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it looked very touching and appropriate. Seventh part of the epic passed the baton to a new era, a new trilogy, new characters, nostalgic for classical films and emotionally tying us to new heroes. When this same trick is tried again, it becomes a little offensive. Parasitizing on old movies is not the best option for the Star Wars universe, which seems to be starting to go around in circles. In this regard, departing from the canon Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which focuses not on the Jedi, but on ordinary soldiers, cogs of this war, looks more honest and fresh "main" Star Wars.
In addition to the surviving characters of the original trilogy (here there is even Admiral Akbar!) And the characters we met in The Force Awakens, in the new film the authors introduce several new figures, and quite significant. But only with the study of their characters is not all so smooth. And if the character Kelly Mari Tran is more or less clear, then, say, with a very interesting hero Benicio Del Toro - no. As with the incredibly strong character of Laura Dern, who simply was not allowed to reveal himself.
However, this is not only a problem of the second plan. There are questions to the main characters. The second film of the new trilogy is coming to an end, and we do not know anything about her characters, except the banalities. By "Let's all-blown up" Dameron is a rebel who does not know how to follow orders. Finn "I want to find Rei" is a man of one purpose. Not people, but templates. Ray herself is a girl with a big heart and numerous complexes. But the top of the template, of course, is the supreme leader Snouk - who plays here the role of banal evil beeches, regularly threatening the rest of the characters with brutal violence and from time to time hurting them. Completely empty character, even offensive, that all the conspiracy theories regarding the supreme leader proved to be untenable.
And that's what Star Wars does not take away - so it's aesthetics, pathos and the ability to build a frame. Space battles still look utterly stupid, but incredibly spectacular. The final battle, despite all its absurdity (the ram, seriously?) Looks fantastic. A red-and-white color scheme, calligraphic and dancing strokes on the sand that mimic the blood - perhaps this is one of the most beautiful fighting scenes in science fiction. Yes there, only a black-and-white freeze frame super-light jump Vice Admiral Holdo justifies the appearance of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on large screens. It is recommended to look in IMAX or in a hall with a laser projector. 3D is optional.
On the other hand, in 2017, after Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner 2049, it's hard to surprise us with special effects. Especially after the Blade Runner 2049 with its perfectionist attitude to the visual component.
Do not get me wrong, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a good movie. Slightly tight, sometimes silly, but good. It's still "Star Wars", a beautiful fairy tale in sci-fi scenery about noble knights and beautiful princesses, crafty villains and folk heroes. That's only against the background of the overabundance of "Star Wars" in the films of the main Star Wars series there must still be something special, something that will highlight it against the background of all these razors with the logos of the Star Wars, Star Wars shampoos, Labutenas of the Star Wars wars ", loot boxes on" Star Wars ". Alas, this ephemeral "something" in Star Wars: The Last Jedi is not.
It's just a good "Star Wars", not the best "Star Wars" in history. As for me, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is inferior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and of course, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. However, no matter what I write, you still watch this movie, it's still "Star Wars". Well, share your impressions in the comments. Only, chur, without spoilers.
Good review. :3
I noticed you didn’t put a number between 1-10 in order to evaluate the movie.
Yeah you right, let it be 7! (My personal opinion)
Good review. On a high level this movie does make a few big changes to the franchise. Although, it is the most polarising Star Wars film ever. The fanbase got split in two.
Great review. I am yet to see it but I think I still will despite it being only "good". Bit like talking to an old friend. Cant always be epic ;-)
Nicely done review! I probably won't see this at the theaters (too little time at the moment) but I definitely plan to once it's out on DVD. I've heard a few of my friends say something similar - it's a good movie, but not one of the best in the franchise. But yes, at least it's still Star Wars!
