Star Wars blog #7: Lords of the Sith (book review)
Hi Steemians! For those of you who enjoy reading the Star Wars books and like to be up to date on the cannon I would like to do an overview of the book Lords of the Sith. I’m going to try and keep it spoiler free so that you can enjoy the book yourself for a future read. The book is written by Paul Kemp and is one of the first books under the new cannon timeframe that was put in place after Disney bought Lucasfilm.
This book takes place in the timeframe somewhat shortly after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. And, its several years before Star Wars Rebels. Anakin Skywalker is the freshly minted Darth Vader and in complete Darth Vader garb. Throughout the book you can see how Vader has flashbacks from his Anakin days but his Vader persona has taken over completely. There is still conflict internally between his old life and his new life. But, it has quickly dimished.
The plot of the story takes place on the planet Ryloth that is home to the species Twi’leks. If you are not up to date on what Twi’leks are, they are the species in the movies and show that have the two large tail-like appendages protruding from the back of their heads. There is conflict on this planet as the Twi’leks led by Cham Syndulla are fighting for independence from the Empire. And a result of this fight brings in Darth Vader and the Emperor into the fight. What seems as a regular mission to oversee efforts by Vader quickly emerges into a larger conflict where the Emperor and Vader become the targets of a manhunt.
A series of events leads to both the Emperor and Darth Vader into a series of events as they try and squash the battle on the planet. Throughout the story you see how Vader is truly a terrifying Sith Lord. From space battles to ground battles, you see the efficiency and tenacity of Vader. And, you see how evil the Emperor is (if you didn’t know already) and how he manipulates and foresees so that events fall into place under his overall plans.
Twists, turns, corruption, intrigue are constant throughout the story. And the resulting end of the story helps define the characters of Vader and the Emperor for the future stories in Rebels, Rogue One, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi.
I’ve been reading several of the new novels in the Star Wars cannon. And, out of the books I rank this as a top 2 between Lost Stars and this awesome novel. If you want to read about battles, politics, and learning more about Star Wars history, I definitely recommend reading this book. And, if you like sci-fi, READ THIS BOOK. It will not disappoint.

Followed and upvoted because I love Star Wars having grown up with it, slightly forcing the love onto my boys but it's a good excuse to collect all the merchandise (it's not for me honest). I haven't seen the books but it's' a good idea - it's so hard getting my kids to read when I used to live for reading - but then when I was their age iPads and whatever you care to watch on a television didn't exist.
Thanks for the comment! Hahaha.. yes, some of the stuff I get my kids is just for them. I'm definitely not going "phew phew" with my kids figures and guns.. honest.. 🤞
Great review! I've enjoyed all of the Star Wars books I've read. I haven't read any of the new canon books, so maybe I'll pick this one up. Congrats on the success of this post!
Thanks for the comment @ethandsmith! I went thru two phase of reading Star Wars books... back when I was in high school (mid 90's) and then since the new cannon started. If you want a good book that will make watching Rogue One a richer experience I recommend reading Catalyst. That's another GOOD book! Thanks for the comment!
Which ones were your favorite in high school? I've read the Thrawn Trilogy and the Corellia trilogy, and I've wanted to read the X-Wing series. I've also read some of the Old Republic novels. I'll check out Catalyst too.
Thrawn trilogy was a must read in high school. I also read Kevin J Anderson's Jedi Academy trilogy, Truce at Bakura, Wedge's Gamble, Wraith Squadron, The Courtship of Princess Leia, and the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy in high school and the years after. Right around the time of the Phantom Menace coming out I stopped reading the books.
Some of the new books I'm looking to begin over the next 6 months to year are the new Thrawn book, Tarkin, Battle Front II: Inferno Squad, and Aftermath: Empire's End. It's a lot of books, but I've got time on my train rides home after work.
Yes. I'm interested in the new Thrawn book. I'd eventually love to read all of them. But I've got so many other books to read. I'm reading James S. A. Corey's The Expanse series right now. It's excellent sci-fi and I'm really enjoying it.
Kudos !! @drstevegilbert I've only watch the movies but now i think i should give a shot to book as well :p
The books are an excellent way to get a richer experience outside the movies. It also gives a few "ah ha!" moments when watching the films. Thanks for the comment!
Unfortnately I never watch star wars before dont know why :/
If you like sci-if or fantasy then the Star Wars universe is definitely worth checking out!
That's great to know about that the book is even so good.. I think I should really read the book... Thanks for reviewing
Thanks for the comment. It's available as paperback, hardcover, e-book, and audio book.

Thank for sharing !!!!
You're welcome!
Great review, makes me want to read it now. I love the movies.
The movies are awesome! I would highly recommended this book. If you want a book that is based around A New Hope, Empire, and ROTJ I recommend Lost Stars. It's a young adult book (for teens). But I had an amazing time reading it.
I will be definitely be reading this book.
