How to make a A-Star Team for your Startup!

in #startup7 years ago (edited)

Think about this!

When you are selling a property, what is the most prime thing that comes to your mind. Its the location right? The better the location, the higher price client pays for it because everyone wants a high lifestyle.

Starting up a business? It’s all about the team, team, team.

A startup is about execution and most important is the team you create. In the event that you have experienced any round of financing, you will understand the significance of having a focused team. Most financial specialists put the team and the leader (Founder) as their #1 criteria for an investment.

Whether you begin alone or with a colleague, in the long run, you can’t scale up alone. The achievement of your business will rely on your ability to draw in more capital & to scale to a new peak not achievable without additional funding.

Say, even in a slight chance that your business starts developing rapidly, you will all of a sudden get yourself encompassed by a team of energetic and brilliant individuals, yet all originating from different backgrounds. Every employee will be different in terms of their desires, ways of life and focus.

So, how do you get such a group of different people to function as a team towards the same objective?

I. Culture should be at the top of your list

When you are planning to hire a new candidate, you should ask yourself: “Will this person contribute towards the success of my business, and will he/she fit our culture perfectly?”

Note, you can teach people different skills as that can be learned overtime but you can’t and never change a person’s passion towards the company. Working as a team will surely put some motivation in the candidate’ mind but over the long term, if he/she doesn’t believe in the company’s way of working; he/she is not a good fit for the firm.

A great company culture is what makes people work together, help each other out and focus towards the same goal. Don’t try to compete with a corporate package– it is generally a red flag when a candidate is negotiating his salary to match a corporate offer.

Keep in mind that, as a founder, it is you who will build that culture in your startup.

II. Be honest and transparent

Value transparency. If your team is working long hours and putting their efforts in building your company alongside you, appreciate them and be the first to promote communication. If you expect them to put in their 100%, then you need to show them the results of their efforts in its true sense. It also goes on to show that you trust your team enough to have an open conversation about company performance and future plans.

III. Give them space

It can be hard as a leader to trust somebody else with important decisions. This is one the biggest problems that destroy efficient teams and make employees rethink their goal. Remember, giving them space will allow them to grow and get you to learn to trust.

I have to admit, I still stay involved heavily in the decision-making, but how the execution is done is up to the team. Let your team deal and negotiate with suppliers or partners on their own. Let them come up with ideas, test them, and bring innovative solutions and only get involved during the final feedback. Very soon, you will find out whom you can trust and who needs a bit more time.

IV. Keep the bad apples away

One team member who is not a team player can be detrimental to your business. They can create a negative team spirit and demotivate other team members. This is a true fact. If an employee doesn’t be motivated to carry out his work, eventually he will give up and he would destroy the productivity of other employees by trying to find a companion for him who can support him in giving up.

Anyone who says, “It’s not my job” should, from my perspective, be asked to leave. A startup is an environment where your team should feel responsible for the overall success of the business, and do whatever it takes to work towards success.

After all, your team is your business.
