I think a lot of people have heard of the Holodomor in passing, but don't really appreciate the scale of the harm. Five million Ukrainians died of starvation under Stalin's regime.

Голодомор/Holodomor is a compound word of голод/holod, Ukrainian for hunger, and мор/mor, Ukrainian for plague.

I highly recommend the movie Mr. Jones about the Welsh journalist Gareth Jones who reported the Holodomor to the western world. He would later be kidnapped and killed by the Soviet secret police.
