Stacktical: An Internet service level reward and compensation platform

in #stacktical6 years ago

We rely on the Internet for many things, from information and entertainment to business. But this can lead to problems, because the Internet is often unreliable – not just because specific online services are fallible, although they are, but also due to technical problems. Downtimes and slowdowns online are always frustrating, and sometimes, given our level of reliance, they can be costly as well.

Service level agreements (SLAs) exist to regulate the relations between Internet service providers and their clients (site owners) in that regard. But the current SLA model is flawed, with contracts that are difficult to enforce – at times by design. Stacktical SAS is offering a different approach, under which SLAs will be handled as smart contracts and token rewards will go to service providers if they meet their obligations or to clients if they do not.

How will the Stacktical plaform operate?

Stacktical's offering consists of several mutually reinforcing components. The first is a predictive testing system that uses load tests to determine how an application would handle increases in traffic. The resulting insights will be made available to both providers and their clients through data mining wrappers, letting them make informed decisions while negotiating SLAs on the platform. Those SLAs will be formed as smart contracts and recorded on the Stacktical public ledger (along with the insights and settlements). Internet providers will need to stake DSLA (Decentralized SLA) tokens when entering this agreement, contributing them to the compensation pool.

The SLAs will be monitored using a decentralised Oracle network. If the specified service level objectives are reached (there are no website outages in several days, the performance is above a certain level and so forth), a DSLA reward will automatically go to the providers. On the other hand, if they do not reach their goals, the tokens will go to their users instead. The latter could then withdraw their tokens to their wallet or exchange them for collectibles and promotional offers on the Stacktical marketplace, adding to the escrow-like compensation pool. Providers will also be rewarded with DSLA for making their scalability data insights available online, and use it to unlock premium features.

What advantages can Stacktical bring to its stakeholders?

Exceeding capacity is one of the main causes of unplanned downtime, and it can be difficult to account for ahead of time. Having this information would be valuable for Internet service providers. They will also benefit in the longer run from moving to an automatic and transparent SLA model, as it will help them attract and retain clients. Those clients will, of course, benefit from compensations, as well as more incentivised (and therefore higher quality) service. Internet users in general will benefit from more stable and dependable sites.

The Stacktical SAS company has been founded by a team of experienced Internet software engineers and was incorporated in France back in 2017. Work on this project started two years before that. The predictive reliability testing feature is already in demo and has received some positive feedback, while other components are under development and are expected to be rolled out over the next two years.

Internet insurance and incentives for an improved infrastructure

Outages are a major problem for both ordinary Internet users and online businesses. A lot today depends on websites and online services being available. Improving the reliability and efficiency of this infrastructure, both on the technical and on the service side, is therefore an important objective for the Internet service industry.

Stacktical's proposal does require enough providers being willing to restrain themselves and take a risk on a new model. But as it is in their own interest to do so, and as they are hardly pleased with outages and client loss themselves, that seems entirely possible. More details about the “compensation marketplace” and its products would be useful in assessing the full value of this system for its potential users, but the core proposal already seems promising enough.
