STACHPOETRY CONTEST VOL 3 | SO THIS IS DEATH
With the last sigh,
With the last whistle
Of my now dormant lungs.
I have become of the earth
But not of the world.
The silence of my thoughts scares me,
I have always had its constant mutter
Keeping me company in the darkness
But now I grope for words
And I find nothing.
Held stiff by the liquid sleep
Of the embalmer’s hands;
Staring, sightless, at the hazy distance.
Someone is calling my name
In the lonely darkness;
I can hear the sobs
Clutching her throat in grief.
I cannot turn; I cannot raise my limbs,
My tear ducts are frozen stiff
Yet I hear her sigh into the night
Begging me to come home
To the warmth of her limbs,
To the cradle of her embrace,
To life.
What is this place that stink of regret?
There are no birds here or running dogs,
The very earth is silent,
Not even a burrowing worm.
I cannot rest neither can I toss nor turn.
I am frozen in time and space, studying
The smoothed grains of good pine,
And the scent of fresh dirt
As I slowly become one with the earth,
Set apart from the world.
And the steady beat of my heart
Is a faint memory
That bears no truth on what is now,
Of the silence that sits like
An empty house within my breastbone.
The pillow is cold and there is no air here
But I can hear the grief
Drop on the soil above me.
Someone weeps for me,
Someone mourns for me,
Someone does not forget me.
Hmmm, so this is how it feels to leave?
This is what it means to grieve?
So this is death?
This is so captivating..
