INSPIRING STORY OF ROBERT KEARNS.

in #stach7 years ago (edited)

Attending a weekly program at church, House on the Rock Church precisely yesterday, I was highly inspired as the pastor shared a brief story of Robert kearns, the windscreen wiper inventor.
I decided to do more findings on the story to share it here on the steemit community.
So I came up with this.
Relax, get inspired and learn*

Robert Williams kearns born March 10, 1927 in Garry, Indiana USA. Died february 9, 2005 (77) IN Baltimore, Maryland. Known for inventing the intermittent wind shield wiper(we all should know the popular wiper onbevery car that clears our windscreen during light rainfalls) . Kearns earn an Engineering degree from the University and a doctorate from case western university.

Kearns claimed that the inspiration for his invention springs up from an accident on his wedding night in 1953. Just when a champagne cork shot into his left eye, leaving that eye temporarily blind. Nearly a decade after in 1963, kearns was driving his ford galaxie through a light rainfall and the constant movement of the whipper blade irritated his already troubled vision. He modelled his mechanism on the human eye which blinks every few seconds rather than continuously. Now don't miss it out, the technology of the light rain whipers were already in existence, but what made kearn's wiper a different innovation was that it wiped it's windscreen after few seconds, just like the human eyes will blink after few seconds.

So kearns windscreen wiper wiped respectively after intervals of few seconds unlike the one which was already in existence which wiped quite fast.

Today, look around you, every windscreen wiper you see on every single car is Robert Kearn's invention. Robert Kearn is recognized all over the world for his ideological invention and is recognized as one of the creative inventors of the 1970's, but then this was not just as easy as its sounding right now.
There were mountains that stood against Kearns great achievements.

                                 THE STORY

Having locally putting his invention to work (the intermittent windscreen wiper), he saw that this was good and the world needed to see the beauty in his idea, of course he needed to share with the world what he's got on his mind.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO ASK, HOW DID HE PLAN TO SHOWCASE THIS WITH THE WORLD?
Good question, then on that note, it's good to also know that Robert kearns only had a good idea for the wiper of the car and not the whole car. He was not into the production of cars and had nothing to do with car manufacturing either.
So how could he have possibly promoted his idea? Well the only way that seemed right was to head for the giant car companies at that time and reason with them.
In the late 1960,s Robert kearns went on to send proposals to the big automobile companies at that time, which were Ford motors and chrysler corporation intensively describing and showing them the light that lied in his windscreen wiper ideology. But then, unfortunately this companies rejected to formally incorporate him into thier business and ended up not licensing him. But then that was not the end of the story, it was very obvious that these big companies held a meeting behind Robert kearns and applied Kearns windscreen wiper method to thier car productions. After all they had set of employed Engineers who were competent enough to produce Roberts type of wiper, so to a great extent endorsing Robert would be a waste of time and resources.

Beginning from 1969 there has started being a visible installment of intermittent windscreen wipers on cars.
To Robert, it was obvious that he's invention had been stolen. This became a challenge to him, watching a big company produce and distribute his own big time inspired innovation. Robert kearns, Being a man of principle and valour proceeded to sue this companies from stealing from him.

He sued the entire Ford motors and Chrysler corporation, well this was a very easy decision anyone could have taken, but then this didn't go out right. Imagine a normal business man going as far as sueing an entire car producing company, one of America's strong economic backbone that worth millions of dollars at that time. They had the most expensive and best of law practitioners you can ever think of, but then against just one normal American business man Robert Kearns.

This took out a great deal from Roberts bank account, living him drained and frustrated. This case wasn't a matter of 1,2,3 years it continued over a decade, year after year, Robert giving up all he had refusing to give up.
A lot of people adviced him to give up the fight, including his family members saying that it was not wise battling against a big company as Ford motors and Chrysler corporation. The more years passed, the more frustrating it became, the more Robert spent fortunes.
The frustration was too much to the extent his wife had to leave divorce him and leave him all alone, this was even more frustration than ever, but yet he didn't give up.
At this time rumors carried it that Robert was given offered some tokens of compensation on the grounds that he let's go off the court case, but he refused. At this time, it was now clear to a lot of people that he was not fighting for the money for his invention but rather he was fighting for the legal right and ownership of his invention. It was more of a Legacy thing that of a benefit thing.

This whole trail of a court case took 14years ☺ to be resolved(Ford Motors 1978-1990. Chrysler corporation 1982-1992). Meaning that for 14 good years, Robert fought with giants and mountains who tried to steal his dream and vision.
Have you tried imagining how this could be frustrating to Robert, sueing two economic giants at the same time?
I guess a lot would have thought him to be very foolish. But then his fight was more of a legacy than money.
On the 14th year, in the court room with Robert vividly insighting what sparked up his inspiration of his typical wiper, Robert kearns won the legal battle 💪 and made his generations to come a lineage of greatness.

R. Kearn won 10.1 million dollars from Ford motors and then the Chrysler verdict was decided in 1992 and was also a victory for Kearns 😁 dennis-kearns-private-investigator-son-of-windshield-wiper-inventor-picture-id50422911.jpg
Chrysler corporation was ordered to pay kearns 18.7 million dollars . So in a rough calculation after spending estimately $10million dollars in legal fees, Robert kearns was paid about $30million Dollars (USD) in compensation. I guess his wife and all those who pressured him to give would have possibly watched him in the news.
Today Roberts car wiper invention is applied on almost every car on earth, if not every car. To add to that Robert has a percentage of reward on every car wiper that is being produced along side with any car. Spelling it out won't be so necessary.
February 9, 2005 kearns died of brain cancer in Baltimore, Maryland. He was aged 77.

What an inspiring story of not giving up.. If he had given up, he would have lost his legacy. Thanks for sharing.

Hi @nmalove it is indeed very nspiring to realize how far this man went on the pursuit of right ownership of his invention. Thanks for your time here, I do appreciate Steemon!

Moral of the story..... Don't give up.
Yea it's easier to give up than pursue your goal, but your goal is more satisfying.
Thanks for sharing
