in #ssglife7 years ago

As we are getting settled it is time for us to start making the land “ours” We have planted a garden with lots of vegetables, and it is going pretty well, we will have some organic veggies for sure! Here is the latest update on the garden. 0509191918a.jpg

and grapes(and grape leaves)0513191925a.jpg in mass abundance,
this verifies the viability of the land and is really yummy too! We have made a couple of trips to the local you pick farm and had some awesome berries, so we are very excited about what is to come. 0511191210_2.jpgWe have done a lot of research on grapes and are very excited to see them grow and learn how to use them effectively. We have picked our own grape leaves and are cooking them tomorrow, we will share the results. We are planning on freezing and canning as much as we can from our land, trading with neighbors and local marketsto stock up on organic veggies for the winter.

We are planning ( in no particular order)

  • a larger garden
    -chickens and goats or sheep
  • a pond
  • a guest cabin
  • a deck for BBQ’s shop updates and climate control
...updating our preps a0511191640.jpgnd working toward self sufficiency, so much to do!!!

We feel our first step is a Tractor, this will help accomplish our plans and is a necessary tool. We have one picked out and are going full force on “Operation we need a tractor!

We will keep you updated on our homestead progress and how the grape leaves worked out.

It looks like you are off to a good start. We are still working on trying to get our blueberries producing well, but nothing tastes as good as fresh homegrown fruit.

Chickens are one of the easiest things one can get started with when homesteading, you just have to make sure you get the ones to best suit your needs. I could not tell you how many times we see people in our local farm store say they want laying chickens/pet for a kid, and they are digging through meat chickens bins.

The Ford 8n tractors are good little tractors for those looking to homestead. I think that what we had before having to upgrade to an International w/ a loader for the cattle.

We're right there with you on the tractor thing! I've been holding out for something with a front end loader, but I think we may have to bite the bullet and get one without it.

I work in a one hectare garden (veggies) and we do everything by hand. Only at the start of the season we hire a so called "loonworker" to plow 30 cm=1 foot deep. Good luck. Berries we will have in august, strawberries in June.
