Nidikumba - The touch sensitive plant


Found this very important plant while walking through the nearby jungle. Took some photographs to share with you. This is not a simple plant, this is the touch-sensitive plant called Nidhikumba. There are many English names for this plant such as

Sensitive Plant,Touch-me-not ,Shame Plant ,Live-and-die ,Humble Plant ,Action Plant ,Mimosa etc

The sinhala name is Nidhikumba which gives a similar meaning of "sleeping plant" . This plant gives a very quick reaction when we touch it. It shows a rapid shrinkage of it's leaves by a very significant bio-chemical reaction. That's why some call this the "action plant".

Most importantly this plant is a valuable ingrediant used in Sinhala traditional treatments.

Excessive bleeding from skin diseases, diarrhoea, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, trauma, bladder stones, urinary tract infections, haemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis, leprosy, white matter, uterine diseases, hair loss, arthritis The leaves, roots and flowers of the Mimosa Pudica (Nidikumba) plant is used to treat a number of ailments such as gonorrhoea, yeast infections and toothache. Sleep apnea relieves depression. Anti-cancer. Has antiseptic, diuretic and laxative properties.
