SPUD2: A Newbie's Journey

in #spud25 years ago (edited)

Let me start by saying thank you to @mariannewest and the #freewrite community for the note in yesterday's five-minute freewrite prompt post about SPUD2, and to @streetstyle for explaining it all. Otherwise, I would have thought SPUD was just another potato, and SPUD2 was, too...

SPUD, I learned, stands for Steem Power Up Day, and 2, of course, is self-explanatory; June 1 is the second such day. All Steemians are asked to convert Steem to Steem Power on this one day, and halt any power downs, sells, and trades until June 2. The idea is to greatly strengthen the entire Steem Economy by increasing the amount of Steem Power, Steem's most powerful form.

The challenge was, I had no idea how to do what I was supposed to do for SPUD2: power up my Steem to SP. I just got clear on the differences between SBD, SP, and Steem itself this week, after being around here since March. So, I did what any determined newbie with a journalism background would do: I started using the "search" tool in Steemit to find out how to do this thing, and documenting the steps along the way so others can learn with me.

I learned from reading @sndbox in this post why having SP is the best way to hold one's Steem and the benefits having more SP provides. I learned from reading @preparedwombat in this post that SP earns about 1.9 percent interest every year.

After this information overload -- pleasant as it was -- I realized the importance of choosing the right search terms... I could get lost down the Steem info rabbit hole all the way into June 2, because I don't have a lot of time to get this done. It so happens that the correct search term was the simplest: "How to power up Steem," which led immediately to Steemit 101 - How to power up! by @rickyjrx. This is a wonderful step-by-step guide, and I highly recommend it to other newbies!

Okay, I still have to actually do this... but now that I know what is going on, I will post about how I got it done a little later!

What I will remember most about SPUD2: another opportunity to understand and participate in how Steem and Steemit works!

Welcome to Steemit and the Steem blockchain @deeanndmathews There is quite a bit to learn about the system and how it works but once you figure that out it gets quite a bit easier. Glad you are participating in #spud and if you can, look up a post by @runicar call "The Onion" it is about Steem and actually delves into why the Steem blockchain and Steem power are so empowering. Take care.

I love onions anyhow, and I can love them even more when I remember that great article by @runicar! That was DEEP and I probably need to read it five or six more times to really get the full understanding, but what I read was phenomenal! Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes, @runicar nailed it right on the head with this Onion post to describe the layers of the Steem blockchain, and yes, it can be information overload but will make more and more sense as you learn and use this new tech. Glad you are here, take care and happy Sunday!!

We all spud together! Great to meet you and see you doing the right thing!
