Splinterlands - Comparison of Battle Interface

in #spt6 years ago

This post is my entry to the Splinterland's weekly curation challange. Thank you Splinterland's curation team for all the support.

The graphics with Splinterlands may not require heavy use of graphic cards, but the gameplay setup uses some heavy brain power. Today I like to compare how battles are setup and operate in Splinterlands versus other games I am playing, Steemnova and Holybread. Steemnova is a text base game that originated from the well known Ogame. While Holybread is a recent new addition on the steem blockchain.

Splinterland's Battle Screen

As basic as it seems, seven positions for player and opponent each with 1 summoner and up to 6 monsters. There is importance as to where each monster is position and which monsters to use in battle. The summoner and monster selections are done prior to reaching the battle screen. Upon running the battle players can speed up, slow down, or pause the battle at any given moment to review/analyze the bout. Furthermore the battle is archived on the Steem blockchain and can be shared via web link to anyone who wishes to view them.

Players when battling an opponent will be randomly chosen within their specific ranking. No higher ranking players should play with lower ranking players and the ranks are broken into five groups, bronze, silver, gold, diamond, and champion. can either select who they want to battle with and wager a certain amount of card packs to the winner.

There is music playing in the background and sound effects on attacks made by either of the players. Additionally graphics of attacks and abilities between monsters are shown to make it somewhat visually appealing.

In daily quests the battle interface remains the same except to complete the quest there is a specific requirement to be met when winning battles. This requirement changes every 24 hours after the previous quest is completed. Which makes the game interesting to play as each time in order to complete the quest the player is challenged to play their cards differently. No two days the same.

Steemnova Battle Screen

There is no battle screen in this game. The only way players know they are in battle is via text. The benefit with text base game like Steemnova is that it uses very little graphics. Loading up the game is also quick. The battles have no real animation whatsoever.

To know how the battle resulted it is listed in both attacker and defender of the battle. It will list all fleet damages and base defense damages. The winner will also earn a loot from defender's base. All shown via text.

There are no sound effects or music in the game. However due to it being text base the learning curve is less than that of Splinterlands. The objective of the game is simplified with simply trying to build the largest fleet and control the most planets in the universe. Basically get the most points to reach the top spot in the universe.

Holy Bread Battle Screen

A game that is in its first week of actual operation and currently the battle screen is better than Steemnova, but in my opinion not as entertaining as Splinterlands. The battle is each player's team which can consist of multiple soldiers, but currently because the game is in its infancy most players only have one soldier to command. When in battle the actions done by each soldier on both teams are presented whether it is attack or being attack the damages are listed. The battles are also on the steem block chain so can be looked back in the future. However the archived battles only lists wins and loses. No playback of the battles similar to Splinterlands.

The game allows players to select their opponents to battle within a 15 spot range of their own ranking. Win the battle will rise their own ranking and earn more bread crumbs. Lose they will remain in their same or drop in ranking.

There are animation of soldiers attacking each other similar to Splinterlands, but no sound effects or music. The graphics of weapons and soldiers are not as detail as the many different cards on Splinterlands. Still Holybread images are more than that of Steemnova.

Conclusions

I am on Steemit and use steem blockchain daily so could only compare games related to steem. By far Splinterlands is the most entertaining out of the three games compared today. This is due to the complexity of the game and the ability to collect and invest in the game. It is not to say Steemnova or Holybread is bad, but to show that Splinterlands is leading the way with one of the best battle interfaces on the steem blockchain. Hope this continues as the game improves as just today @splinterlands posted on updates including the introduction of its mobile app!
