Pretty great experiment and I must say that I have done the same. The luck on my side is that I got as rewards some powerful cards which I have sold for 20$, 80$, 10$ and few like this. This allowed me to grow some of the clans to battle better and earn more. But fore sure you can thrive even without an investment in the game.
