Five Takeaways from Chelsea Loss to Valencia
Chelsea has again failed to win at Stamford Bridge this season going down to Valencia in the Champions League. A 74th-minute goal to Rodrigo was enough for all three points. Here’s six takeaways for Chelsea following the loss, with preparations beginning for a weekend match-up with Liverpool:
- Lampard stuck with the 3-4-2-1 formation which was used against Wolves. The formation looks great in dominating possession and games but Chelsea’s failure to convert ultimately cost us the game.
- Despite the loss, the form of Willian has been promising. Tasked with taking on Hazard’s role, he was the biggest threat against Valencia and constantly targeted the defence. To take his game to the next level he’ll need to make better decisions, looking to make a pass instead of overplaying it.
- Ross Barkley had the chance to draw level in the 87th minute following a VAR-decision for a penalty on Valencia’s Daniel Wass. Barkley had shrugged off Jorginho, Tammy Abraham and Willian to take the penalty but clipped the crossbar as it sailed over.
- Chelsea lost to a side who sacked manager Marcelino only last week. The decision has brought disillusionment amongst it’s fans and players have been involved too. Ezequiel Garay was a notable star voicing his displeasure and calling the decision “not fair”. It’s a game Chelsea really should have won.
- Frank Lampard remains winless at Stamford Bridge this season following draws to Leicester City, Sheffield United and this loss. More interestingly is the fact that Chelsea went undefeated in the Europa League last year however have lost their opening Champions League match.
- Mason Mount was forced off early in the first half following a challenge by Francis Coquelin. Chelsea will be sweating for 48 hours until the full extent of the injury is determined. He’ll be missed as he’s scored three goals in his last five league starts.
