Rafael Nadal won his 19th Grand Slam title yesterday with a dramatic victory in his fourth US Open championships by defeating Daniil Medvedev of Russia, 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6 , 6-4, in New York.

In the win, the 33-year-old Katsilas needed just one more win to beat Roger Federer in the all-time men's record with 20 Grand Slam titles. He is now the second oldest champion in New York, followed by Ken Rosewall in 1970 who won at the age of 35.

"Has been one of the most emotional nights in my tennis career," Nadal said.

A tribute leading to his victory brought Nadal to tears.

"The way that the match became very dramatic at the end, that makes this day unforgettable," he added.

“Watching all the success, all the moments that came to my mind, I tried to hold the emotion, but some moments [were] impossible.”

After posting a lead, 2-0, in the first two sets, Nadal, unexpectedly, suffered a grueling blow when the score dropped, 2-2 after the fourth set.

He admits, at this point, he must have felt right nervous, before he could fully claim the victory that lasted nearly five hours.

"This victory means a lot," said Nadal who, besides the championship trophy, also won a $ 3.85 million cash prize. “And the way it happened. It was hard to control the nerves. The nerves were so high after having the match almost under control. ”
