South Africa which was once among the top football teams in Africa has continued to deteriorate with the most recent embarrassing loss coming at the hands of Lesotho. Lesotho beat South Africa 3-0 at home to book a fixture with Zimbabwe in a bid to make it to African Nations Championships (CHAN) 2020.

The first match which was away to South Africa ended 3-2 in favor of Lesotho which ensured that Lesotho went through on an average score of 6-2.

Lesotho which has never qualified for a major tournament is currently down below South Africa by 74 places in Fifa rankings. It won this fixture against all odds.

This loss shows weaknesses in South Africa's football federation. 2 days before the game, England-born national coach Stuart Baxter had actually quit citing the lack of professionalism and passion in the team and federation.

South African clubs had refused to release players to represent the National team for the CHAN qualifers which attributed to the poor performance against Lesotho.
