Is Your City the Best Sporting City in the World?
I come from Sydney, Australia and I declare that we are not the best sporting city in the world.
Why?
Well I love Sydney and Australia’s a very sporting nation. But, we’ve got our sporting culture all wrong.
Our sporting landscape is overly saturated and there’s no citywide vibe. Here’s a snapshot of Sydneys saturation of major sporting competitions and the number of teams we have :-
- NRL - 8 teams in Greater Sydney and 2 in regional NSW (16 team league)
- AFL - 2 teams in Greater Sydney (18 team league)
- A-League - 2 teams in Greater Sydney (10 team league)
- Big Bash League Cricket - 2 teams in Greater Sydney (8 team league)
- Super Rugby (lol) - 1 team in Sydney/NSW (15 team league)
- NBL - 1 team in Sydney (9 team league)
Although it may seem a good thing to have so many different competitions and teams to support in the one city, our stadiums are rarely packed and game day experiences are blasé.
