The disgusting nature of Racism in football.
The incredible nature of football is that it is a source of joy and pain in equal measure for billions of people around the world. Families gather around the TV and ridiculously watch 22 men trying to put a ball into the net for points. That is if you think of football in the most literal sense.
However, we who love football and other sports know that it is more than that. We identify with the people on the pitch, with other fans and it then becomes a community.
The term equality gets thrown about a lot and while most of the time it is normally used for political correctness, clearly are players are not equal - black players always seem to get more criticism.
Now, while we know racism is not a reserve of black players, that is what is most visible online and on our TV's. That is probably more because of the consequences of slavery and the resulting bigotry and elitism that has been passed down through the generations.
Being African and obviously black, despite being too young to even comprehend slavery and even colonialism, what I do see is the influence of those things on our culture and even our laws. But we are here now. History is just that, history.
How are players like Moise Kean, Tammy Abraham and Pogba still experiencing racism despite living in countries that are predominantly white since they were children?
On the part of Moise Kean, his team mate at Juventus literally had the cheek to even blame Kean for inciting the fans who racially abused him. Really?
If we are to talk about racism, it is more a societal problem and that is something that does not go away easily. To make matters worse, it is something that politicians love to tap into to sway public opinion and it is therefore not surprising that the issue of racism has started peaking with the Brexit debate in the UK.
I can say that confidently because in my own country, what we have is tribalism and that peaks around elections when politicians are trying the true and tried ethnic balkanization to shore up numbers. There is even a moniker for it which was coined during the last general elections - The Tyranny of Numbers.
In Paul Pogba's case, this has been an ongoing agenda championed by Graeme Souness and inexplicably by someone considered a United legend in Gary Neville. Souness I can partially forgive for his bias against Pogba but for Gary Neville, clearly there is a level of hate towards Paul that guides his attacks.
It is starting to become ridiculous and quite noticeable by fans of Manchester United and his opinions of the player are being questioned on Twitter by more visible personalities.
The fact that he told Pogba to 'do one' when a scheduled post sponsored by Adidas was posted on Paul Pogba's page after Jose Mourinho was sacked tells you he has something against the player personally. Whatever it is, he is seems to be carrying the metaphorical torch for this Pogba witch hunt ahead of Souness and that in itself is shocking.
First it was Tammy Abraham then Paul Pogba this season. I wonder who is next before racial bigotry becomes an issue that has to be addressed here and now.
We are all equal.
