It seems fighters, like musicians, die in pairs...

The mixed martial arts artist, Kevin Ferguson, better known as Kimbo Slice has passed away at the age of 42, he was confirmed dead after being taken to hospital near his Florida home on Monday night.

The Bellator MMA President, Scott Coker's statement read:

"We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family. One of the most popular MMA fighters ever, Kimbo was a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport."

No foul play is suspected, there had been rumours surrounding Slice's health since last year, his MMA record was 5-2-1.

Slice first came to prominence as a street fighter, going around his neighbourhood and challenging people to fight him. He would persuade them by offering them money, however this tactic often saw him fight "bums" in need of some cash.

Kimbo clearly enjoyed contact sports and is even seen in one of his videos offering a guy $200 so he could tackle him after receiving a pass, in a brutal American football take down.

Slice joined Bellator MMA in January 2015, nearly five years after his last MMA fight, he posted a No Contest and a win against Dhaffir Harris and Ken Shamrock respectively.

"Outside the cage, he was a friendly, gentle giant and a devoted family man. His loss leaves us all with extremely heavy hearts, and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family and all of Kimbo's friends, fans, and teammates."

He is survived by his partner Antoinette Ray.
