BABE RUTH and the openning of the new Yankee Stadium, 1923. Several photos seldom seen.

Welcome Steemian friends. I hope your weekend is a good one! I recently came upon a photo of Babe Ruth ( a svelte Ruth) on the field on openning day April 18, 1923.

The Yankee were not happy tenants of the New York Giants in the Polo Grounds since 1913.
The Yankees acquired Babe ruth from Boston in 1920 and started to outdraw the Giants in the Giants own park! the Giants gave the Yankees notice to vacate! This was 1921. the Yankees by May of 1922 broke ground on their own ball park.

It was to be the first triple deck park and hold about 70,000! It was the first to be called "stadium".

New York's White Construction broke ground in May, 1922. Eleven months later the first game was played. That in itself for the day, is amazing!

74,000 plus watched the game and Ruth fittingly hit a 3rd inning three run homer to win the game 4-1. Ruth was the big draw and thus the term "The House that Ruth Built" is spoken today. Without him and the huge crowds he drew, doubtful the Stadium wouold have been built at that time. Certainly not that magnitude.

I am hopeful you've enjoyed this bit of baseball and Yankee history. I am proud to say that one afternoon in Aug. I was able to play on the original field (late 60's) before scouts wanting too see me and my left arm pitch! I did not tell them it was sore..they could see for themselves. A memory I'll never forget, however.
