WCW Slamboree 1993 A Legends Return Took Place in Georgia – May 23rd, 1993 – Today in Wrestling History
WCW Slamboree 1993 A Legends Return was the first time that World Championship Wrestling used the Slamboree name. This event took place in Atlanta, Georgia at The Omni. Approximately 7,000 fans were in attendance for the event. There were many legends on the card for this event.
WCW Slamboree 1993 saw changes
Various athletes that were intended to be in action at WCW Slamboree 1993 were not. Bob Armstrong was replaced by his son, Brad, in the Legend Tag Team Match. Scott Norton was replaced by The Prisoner in a “Bounty Match” against Sting. In the steel cage match we saw Tom Zenk replacing Shane Douglas as Ricky Steamboat’s partner.
There was much going on at WCW Slamboree 1993 as well though. The WCW Hall of Fame saw new members inducted. Lou Thesz, Mr. Wrestling II, Verne Gagne, and Eddie Graham saw induction.
There was also a “Legends Ceremony” that celebrated many legends of the business. Among the athletes celebrated were Ole Anderson, The Crusher, The Fabulous Moolah, Greg Gagne, Stu Hart, Magnum T.A., Dusty Rhodes, and many more.
Match card for the night
The opening match saw 2 Cold Scorpio & Marcus Bagwell take on Bobby Eaton & Chris Benoit in tag team action
Sid Vicious made his return to World Championship Wrestling against Van Hammer
Dick Murdoch & Don Muraco & Jimmy Snuka saw action in a six-man tag match. Their opponents were Blackjack Mulligan, Jim Brunzeil, and Wahoo McDaniel
The fourth match featured Brad Armstrong & Thunderbolt Patterson challenging Baron Von Raschke & Ivan Koloff
Dory Funk Jr took on Nick Bockwinkel next
Paul Orndorff & Rick Rude saw action against Dustin Rhodes & Kensuke Sasaki
Sting wrestled The Prisoner in the aforementioned “Bounty Match”
Eighth on the card was Brian Pillman & Steve Austin in a steel cage match for the WCW World Tag Team Championship. Their opponents were Ricky Steamboat & Tom Zenk
The lead into the main event saw Barry Windham versus Arn Anderson for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship
The main event saw Davey Boy Smith versus Big Van Vader for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship
Great mix of legends and younger talent
As you can see from the match card above, WCW Slamboree 1993 was a good mix of talent and experience. Many legends on this card are no longer with us, may they rest in peace.
