World Cup Groups finished, Bracket set

Sudden death football is here as the 16 team bracket is set for the World Cup Knockout Stage. There will be no more draws as teams will now play extra time and shootouts if necessary.

Group play finished with Belgium defeating England 1-0 in a winner wins Group G match. England also advances from Group G.

Columbia defeated Senegal 1-0 to win Group H. Japan advances as well from Group H.

There were certainly some surprises in Group play with Germany failing to advance for the first time since 1954.

Here is the bracket for the Knockout Stage.

There are some great first round matchups and it will be exciting to watch these teams play matches where everything is on the line.

Brazil vs Mexico is a must see on Monday. The Knockout Stage starts Saturday with two great games. France vs Argentina then Uruguay vs Portugal.

My predictions for the first day are Argentina 2-1 over France and Portugal to defeat Uruguay 1-0.

It will be exciting to watch which teams can make deep runs and who will lift the cup.

Four of the last five defending champions have failed to advance from group play and this is the 3rd in a row!

My brother mentioned that to me so I had to look it up (https://www.si.com/soccer/2018/06/27/world-cup-defending-champions-history-results).

I'm super excited for Saturday too but I think France will prevail over Argentina.

It wouldn't surprise me if France wins. Argentina only looked good for moments in the group play and France had the opportunity to rest starters while Argentina was playing for their tournament life. It should be a great opener for the Knockout Round.
