VAR, players stopped for 5 min or more. What will happen this winter?
This year as you know, in some of the major European football championships, the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has been included. A kind of moviola assisting the referee at his request but can only be called on four occasions, to give a penalty, assign a goal, direct expulsion, and identity error.
On Sunday, as an International fan, I was watching Inter-Spal. At 21 minutes there was a penalty episode for the Inter, but the referee had not assigned it, but as a follow-up to strong protests, he called VAR. 5 minutes to make a decision, between replay transmission delays and further time lost by the referee. Ok, he served, he was assigned a penalty kick that would not have been whistled. But my thoughts go to those 5 minutes when the players have stayed still. Now the temperatures are still good, but when it's cold in the winter, if players have to stay still 5 minutes for each episode, could have negative consequences on their physical condition by cooling their muscles and consequently the greatest risk of injury, too much break the show to the fan and the same is true for the rhythm of the game. A beautiful game with a lot of action can become boring because of the VAR.
With this I do not say it's wrong to use it, because I was hoping for a lot in the moviola, especially in the Italian championship, where the severe mistakes of the referees are many. But it has to be used differently, faster and more efficiently. I also agree, with that said by Gianluigi Buffon, football is a hard sport, full of contacts, if all collision in the area are penalty it would be just a harm. What do you think?
