5 Sports which was removed from the Olympics through the years

in #sports7 years ago

There is a few sports which are making a comeback to the Olympics. Golf and rugby has made it's comebacks in Rio 2016, but another interesting question is which sports was cut from the Olympics through the years. (Rugby was in the Olympics during the 1924 games.

Cricket

Cricket was included in the games during the 1900 games in Paris. The sport did however not make it too far due to the fact that there was not enough countries participating in the games. According to reports they played a two day game in a Cycling stadium and had only a few soldiers as attendees.

Polo

Polo made 6 appearances in the Olympics between 1900 and 1936. Only the British team competed in all of these games and won 6 medals of which 3 was gold.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse only made it as a medal sport during the 1904 and 1908 games. Although it is a very popular sport, it only returned as a demonstration sport in a few Olympics thereafter.

Croquet

The French dominated this sport which only made an appearance at the Paris games in 1900. Apparently 9 of the 10 competitors were French, and therefor took all the medals.

Tug of War

Tug of war was a competitive event in the Olympics from 1900 till 1920 an had its fair share of controversy during the games.

Thanks for the post that was really interesting. Tug of War...who would have thought.

Our pleasure. Yes, and there are a few more.

When you think about all of the sports in the Olympics now, and how intense they all are, it's hard to imagine croquet being one of them!

Tug of war is an olympic sport?? Wow! Never knew. Thanks for sharing.

It is really fun when you use the professional equipment and everything.

Jip ... actually had a reasonably large and international following way back in the day :)

Thanks for this!

You are welcome

Thanks for sharing :-) @sportspodium I am following. Best of Luck !

Cricket would be call, takes too long I guess.

Not if you play 20 over cricket. That could be really nice. Exciting to watch and can be played under lights. The real question is how broadly is the sport played. There are more than 200 Olympic federations, and a fair amount of them need to play the sport for it to be included. With Ireland and Afganistan added there are only 12 countries that plays "Test" cricket over 5 days. Also only about 20 countries play 50 over (one day) cricket! The list is far larger with 20 over cricket, and it is far easier for new countries to start playing that format.

I would agree, yeah that makes sense. Can I buy tokens yet?
