Spotify censoring Joe Rogan already

in #sports4 years ago

I realize this isn't a purely sports-oriented blog post but I do have other interests in life, namely when it comes to one of my favorite comedians / broadcasters, Joe Rogan.

The Joe Rogan Experience is one of the most popular podcasts in the world and this is the reason why he was able to secure a $100 million contract with Spotify to make them the exclusive broadcaster of his show. Joe is pretty well-known for not being affiliated with anyone's particular politics and he features guests from across the spectrum. I think this is absolutely awesome because the partisan nature of just about everything else out there is annoying and predictable.

However, this didn't sit well with staff members at Spotify and now some of them are threatening to strike and protest at their own place of work if Joe Rogan is not censored. Of course they are in New York City, a land of a completely different mindset than I believe most of the free world.

So what did Joe do that was so wrong? Well the idea is that he said something on his show that wasn't 100% true in regards to fires being set in Portland. I don't know the specifics of it but I also dont think anyone else does seeing as how the media twists what is going on in Portland (or anywhere else for that matter) depending on what their own political bias happens to be.

Rogan doesn't really have a side in the game of politics and for the most part that isn't what his show is about. His guests on the shows I have recently listened to were very varied and included Mike Tyson, Rob Lowe, and Edward Snowden. Joe always hesitates to take any steadfast side in anything involving politics and that is what I think sets him apart. His show is entertaining and easy to listen to because it doesn't appear as though he is really trying to convince his audience to change their minds about anything... except weed. Joe is a big proponent of marijuana legalization.

Honestly though, anyone that can get Elon Musk on their show and get him high as hell to have an interview about all manner of things is doing the good lord's work in my mind.

The people in New York are being a bit crazy about this because they want to have creative control over Joe Rogan and if they were to get that I would be willing to bet that Joe would walk away from the entire thing. The reason why Joe's show is so great is because nobody else has creative control over him and if they were to get it, the show wouldn't be as good or perhaps not good at all.

This is what the demands of the staffers are

(the demands) would include the ability to directly edit or remove sections of upcoming interviews, or block the uploading of episodes deemed problematic. The employees also demanded the ability to add trigger warnings, corrections, and references to fact-checked articles on topics discussed by Rogan in the course of his multi-hour discussions.

Does this sound at all like something you want? At this current point in time there is some heated debate about unfair censorship on Youtube and FB as well as others and now these same nutjobs that want to have control over the flow of information want to extend that to an extremely popular podcaster. It's insane if you ask me and I would like to see the management of Spotify release all the people involved with it if they do strike. Censorship is rampart in our internet lives and the fact that these feckless idiots want to have even more control is pretty outrageous to me.

Spotify has already caved to some of the outrage mob's demands where they censored interviews with people including Alex Jones, Milo Yiannopoulos, Gavin McInnes and others. I am sure it is just a coincidence that almost all of the censored material comes at the hands of people considered conservative.
