Americans Are Abandoning the NFLsteemCreated with Sketch.

A polling company named The Winston Group is reporting that the favorability ratings for the NFL have dropped from 57 percent to 44 percent in just a one month period.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4958858/Shock-study-finds-NFL-drops-baseball.html

Basically:

  • The favorable ratings for the NFL have dropped from 57% to 44% in one month.
  • The unfavorable rating for the league is the highest it's ever been at 40 %
  • The National Anthem protest along with criticism from Trump has caused core fans (men aged 34-54), to turn away from the NFL
  • President Trump predicted that the NFL will 'go to hell' if they don't listen to his demand for a ban on protests.

My Take:

  • This has been a long time coming. Players using their fame to call attention to a cause is one thing, acting disrespectfully toward the National Anthem is quite another. One does not draw sympathy toward a cause by angering half the population.
  • The NFL could have stopped this last year by fining Colin Kaepernick. Sure he has the right to free speech, but his employer also has the right to dictate codes of conduct for their employees (the players). In other words, he has every right to protest on his own time.
  • Many accuse President Trump of starting a war with the NFL, when in fact the war was started long ago. President Trump basically said out loud what a MAJORITY of Americans were already thinking. (If you watch the speech where he first made those remarks....he was greeted with thunderous applause).

Prediction:

  • The NFL will double-down and refuse to heed the calls from Americans to stop the protests.
  • Their product will be further damaged.
  • Roger Goodell will be fired in the off-season.

The NFL is dead as a doornail!

NFL ratings are still in the basement!

The NFL now stands for Not For Long.

Goodell is presiding over the end of the NFL!

Agreed 110%

They are playing "American Football" and protest the nations anthem. Makes me sick.
It makes Americans look completely opposite of the "united" states they should be.

Its the nations most popular sport, and they wont even show pride for the nation who makes it possible!
All those players should be ashamed...

Your predictions are most likely going to come true once certain ad companies boycott the NFL. Ive heard rumors...
But if that happens, the clampdown would be swift

I believe the NFL management has allowed this to happen out of some misguided belief that they are being "tolerant" (in truth,I think they really fear being called racist). In the end, they allowed this situation to fester and grow into a monster.

The end result is that the protesters have become more brazen (what was once kneeling by one person has now morphed into a Black Panther style fist in the air salute. One can only wonder what is next) and now they've alienated an ever growing number of their loyal core.

I honestly thought they would use these protests as a ratings booster so the NFL would be the big story every week...
Now that its starting to backfire, something needs to be done. Fists in the air... just trashy.

Yeah I agree with alot of this. They have many other ways to protest the prez if they wish.. to do it during the anthem appears disrespectful no matter why they say they're doing it. It's causing more division. Ppl will say your racist if you talk bad about these protests but ppl pay big $ to watch a sport that's 70% black. They pay $100 to wear jerseys with black players on them so I dont believe race plays a part of this. I watch hockey and their players stand and respect the Canadian and US anthems. I watch baseball and they have players from all over the globe that stand and honor the anthems and even sing along even when theyre not from the States. It makes the NFL look bad but ofcourse it's Trump so ppl have to look for any way to revolt. Ppl don't go to sporting events to see political protests..they're there to have fun

Thanks!!! Much appreciated!

Trump was right....again!

MAGA!

👌👌👌👌

The true scumbags are still kneeling!

Trump called out the NFL and he was right

Goodell just signed a new contract so I dont think he'll be fired. Yes I've read other sources claiming ratings are down and some of it can be blamed on the anthem protests but the staggering numbers of usual views are just dying down slightly imo. I'll admit I'm a casual fan, of all the big sports I follow football the least, but I also think it's just a boring time for football right now. The majority of the QBs suck, the standout talent doesn't seem as good as usual and the play isn't as hyped or as exciting as usual it seems this season. Noones talking about the play they're talking about the anthem protests which is telling. It's early so we'll see..

Yeah, that one of the great things about America...never believe your contract. If they truly want him out...he's out. The NFL can claim all they want it's not the protests, but they're only lying to themselves. NFL fans are very loyal to their teams and they stick with them through the good years and bad years.

Now granted, another reason for the slide in ratings is that they've expanded the league too far, but that's in the past. Now trying to play games overseas (Mexico, England, Japan) just looks like they're desperate. But that's not an excuse for the ratings falling off a cliff. If that were the case, there would be a slow, steady decline.

I'm not going to say the brand is damaged irreparably, but there will be substantial damage to the point that there maybe some weaker market teams folding and a consolidation of the league.

Oh no, those games in london arnt out of desperation.
London loves those NFL games and pay big money to contract it out. The first game was a tester to try out the market and it blew away expectations. Thats why each year they have more games. Everyone has sold out, and they keep asking the NFL for more.
I think more international interest is a great thing... not sure how well japan will go, but the brits are in love and here to stay

Thanks for the perspective, I stand corrected. Of course the NFL is going to claim it was a success, but hearing it from someone on the ground makes me rethink my earlier assumption.

Spot on man. I stopped watching when they let the Patriots get away with blatent cheating. The Kaepernick and Steelers bullshit just solidified my stance that sports suck and they shouldn't be paid more than the teachers that gave them their education.

Thanks man. I'm a lifelong Steelers fan and I have to say they disgraced themselves 2 weeks ago. I literally have no desire to watch them after their little outburst.

That's right, bitch and moan about people protesting institutionalized racism because gasp it's cutting into entertainment and disrespectful. Right? Bullshit. This is just nationalism in response the the big scary world changing. Taking a knee during the national anthem is not disrespecting soldiers or our founding fathers... It is purely a means of peaceful protest of a police state that kills innocent humans. GTFOH with this bullshit.

Your last sentence speaks volumes about your level of tolerance towards anyone with an opposing opinion. Kudos.

And thank you, I will "bitch and moan" because that is the blanket of free speech you claim for yourself and the football players who act in such a distasteful and disrespectful manner. I am not opposed to free speech, however I can opine as to whether it is in good taste or not.

As for your assertion that they (these NFL players) are protesting against a "police state that kills innocent humans", I could not disagree more (which is, of course my right).

While I cannot and will not deny that there may be some "racist" people within a given police department, I wholeheartedly dismiss the idea that racism is "institutional" (i.e. all police are "racist" and the first inclination of all policemen are "racist" and that the entire system is "racist").

These protests are little more than a tantrum. One or two High Profile cases in a country of 300 million people (cases that were not decided in your favor) and all of the sudden the "entire system is corrupt"??? Childish thinking, childish logic, and thus childish protests.

The funny part is these protests will end. Owners will lose money due to these ongoing and ever expanding protests and they will eventually put an end to them. Players who refuse even when they are expressly told to will be fined and fired (I might add, just like our President Donald J Trump suggested). These protesters will fold and fall into line because in the end, their $$$ matter more than their supposed principles.

They may fold, sure. But that is not the point, the real problem is you blatently refuse to consider we have institutionalized racism. I do not generalize when it comes to the police officers as people. They are people too, with their own thoughts and opinions. There are definitely non racist police. My point is that it's embedded in the system itself. The way officers essentially occupy neighborhoods, the way they are trained which teaches them to escalate a situation before trying to resolve it peacefully.

Have you no compassion?
