The devil is in the details for the Derek Carr deal.
The Derek Carr contract is emerging as one of those examples of the Devil being in the details and how people over embellish NFL contracts.
How it's being reported, it seems like Carr is making $40.5 million per year for the next three years.
That's not what happened. This is a very team-friendly deal
Obviously, making $25 million a year is nothing to scoff at. Derek Carr is already a rich man and he'll be richer after this season; but, the new extension doesn't actually kick in until next season. What the contract did was frontload bonuses and guaranteed money and backload salary.
What the Raiders did was lock Carr in for this upcoming season to the point that cutting him would cost more money than keeping him. After this season, the Raiders could cut him for practically nothing by NFL cap standards.
So, this contract that's being reported as a three year, $121 million deal is really a pay cut for this season followed by three seasons that could be worth anything from $5.6 million to $121.5 million.
