Dodger fans create a welcome home that Freddie Freeman won’t forget
The “Fre-ddie” chants began before the Dodgers’ prized free-agent acquisition stepped to the plate in the eighth inning of a tie game Tuesday night and continued building into a steady crescendo after he roped a ground-rule double the other way.
A minute after his hit, the sounds of Freddie Freeman’s name still rang loudly around Dodger Stadium in his first home game as a Dodger. A pitching change allowed for Freeman to take in the unmistakable reverberations from second base. He looked up to a suite and saw his family jumping up and down. The opportunity for nights like this was what brought the Southern California native to Los Angeles.
Freeman expressed his appreciation to his new home crowd. He removed his helmet with his right hand. With his left hand, he waved to the 52,995 Dodger fans screaming his name.
“It’s just special when 50,000 people can create a moment that you’ll never forget,” Freeman said.

Seconds later, Freeman sprinted home as the go-ahead run on a hit from Trea Turner. Freeman would hear his name again soon after. The Dodgers batted around, continuing their early trend of boom-or-bust innings by exploding for six runs in the eighth inning of a 9–3 win against the Reds.
“It’s really hard to put into words how that felt,” Freeman said. “I’m just glad we won.”
