The Arabs from the "PSG" bought up the whole of Europe. How did they end up in Paris?

in #sports7 years ago (edited)

For the 2010-11 season, PSG felt bad: the debt grew to several tens of millions of euros, accountants forecast another (albeit not huge) budget deficit, and US bosses seem to have lost hope of restarting the project.
At about the same time, negotiations on apparently the most important deal in modern football were boiling: Prince of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the head of UEFA Michel Platini, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and a couple of characters more modestly understood how PSG will live on.

May 31, 2011 fund Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) through the "daughter" bought 70% stake in the club.4.jpg
Who exactly owns PSG?
Behind the general formulation of the "sheikh" are hidden managers with convincing resumes, rich experience in sports and working strategy.

The owner of the club is Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, chairman of the fund QIA. Since 2013 - Emir of Qatar (received a post from his father at 33, becoming the youngest monarch of the world), a passionate sports fan:

  • heads the NOC and represents the country in the IOC;

  • led the organizing committee for the Olympic Games 2020 in Doha;

  • With the participation of Al-Thani, Qatar achieved the World Athletics Championships-2010 (indoor), the World Cup 2015 and will host the World Cup-2022.
    QIA is a national fund that was created in 2005 "with the aim of strengthening the state economy for diversification into new asset classes" (quotation from the official website).

Now such assets of QIA are almost 300 billion euros: air carriers, construction companies, oil companies, banks, auto giants, mobile operators, clothing stores, hotels etc - diversification in absolute terms.

Of course, the emir is far from the operational management of the "PSG".
Who then leads?

Nasser Al-Khelayfi, the first foreign president of the club in the history, the chief of that very "daughter" - the fund Qatar Sports Investments (QSI). The task of the structure, as one can guess from the title, is to invest in sports at all levels.

Al-Helifi has an impeccable reputation as a manager. He is 43, since 2006, he headed the television network Al Jazeera Sports, later renamed to beIN Sports. Briefly, with the development of complete order: nearly four dozen channels, from the continents only South America is not covered.

Among other things, Al-Helifi runs the national tennis federation and holds the post of vice-president in the Tennis Federation of Asia. In the 90's he was a professional, even participated in the "Roland Garros".

The personal fortune of Al-Helayfi is more than a billion euros.

Probably, there is a special irony in that from 2010 to 2016 QSI sponsored "Barcelona". After accusations of fraud, the club even published details of the contract for 171 million euros.

It's even more ridiculous that the parties canceled the new treaty after the epochal spanking of the Parisians at the Camp Nou six months ago (6: 1) - it is believed not so much because of the outcome, but because of the judging and the ensuing conflicts .
To begin with, why does a club come from France?

  1. Qatar was looking for new economic and political partners, in addition to the United States. The French raid started for the Arabs in the middle of zero, and the victory of Nicolas Sarkozy in the presidential election greatly facilitated the task of joining. Parliament gave the Qatari people serious benefits: profits from their investments in France were no longer taxed - Qatar in return invested in various sectors of the economy.

  2. Something also meant the number of Arab migrants (or their descendants) in France - up to a third of the total population. To whom, as not to media al-Haleifi guru, understand the importance of this audience.

"PSG" was the best option: the sheikhs went directly to the capital, where it's easy to lure the stars, and into a single professional club for a multimillion-dollar agglomeration.

"PSG" was sold in two stages: in 2011 - 70% for 50 million euros. In addition, QSI liquidated the deficit by 28 million and distributed all 20 million debts. In 2012, the Arabs withdrew the remaining 30%. The total value of the club was then estimated at 100 million euros (ha-ha) - the previous owners even squeezed out profits.

Sarkozy, the PSG fan, wanted the problem club to get a strong owner and no longer created a problem for the city that owns the Park de Prens stadium and leases it.

A few years ago, France Football claimed that Michel Platini, in exchange for supporting the Qatari bid for the World Cup 2022, allowed beIN Sports to enter the French market. Nasser Al-Helayfi's media group, having laid out three hundred million euros, bought the rights to display League 1 from 2012, and Platini's son became a legal advisor to QSI.

By the way, the telecontract with beIN Media Group was also profitable for Sarkozy: the Arabs left the multi-year broadcaster and former shareholder of the "PSG" Canal +, who did not support the president of the country, without the rights to League 1.

The ideal deal is that all the negotiators are happy.
What are the goals of the sheikhs?

Political, business, image. Finally, personal - why not? Obviously, they like sport on their own - not just as a way to earn and influence. Especially as to earn, and to influence too it turns out great. According to the winter survey of Deloitte, PSG is in the top-7 in terms of revenues for the season and in revenue per match day.

In the rest - nothing special: to make "PSG" the most powerful club in the world.
Why did Sarkozy and Platini participate in this?
