The physics of Deontey Wilder

in #sports7 years ago (edited)

Deontay Wilder is probably the scariest heavyweight boxer that there has ever been so far. Physically, he looks like a taller version of Joe Louis, missing weight at all the places that you would WANT to be missing weight for price fighting, particularly around the waist. At 6-7 and about 230 he is built like one of your stronger basketball forwards.

But the thing which is producing all of the one punch knockouts is the exact same jab/overhand right combination which Joe Louis used, except that the reach advantage which Wilder enjoys over all previous heavyweights is making that second punch INVISIBLE to opponents. That is, like Louis, Wilder, while throwing the jab, is opening himself up and reaching way back with the right hand and then throwing it from so far back that by the time an opponent picks it up in his peripheral vision, the punch is moving at maximum velocity and it is too late to try to account for it and the opponent simply gets splattered.
