My opine on the Khabib controversy (UFC)

in #sports6 years ago (edited)

I typically enjoy my chances as far as predicting the future is concerned and if I am wrong about this one (and i really don't think i am) I will eat my words. At the moment there is lots of back-and-forth about this person getting fired and that person not getting their payout but based on what I know about money and UFC - i have a prediction.

If you like MMA you were watching, if you don't like MMA you probably ended up hearing about it anyway much to your chagrin. However at the end it was a pretty good fight but it just ended in a way that well, i suppose we are meant to believe was not planned (I don't believe.)

In case you were in a cave here is what happened: After chocking Conor McGregor out in the 4th round, Khabib jumped over the octagon fence and attacked a teammate of McGregor's and chaos erupted in the ring after. If you were paying attention to the fight Khabib won handily, and had a strategy that was simply much better than McGregor's. Had it went the full 5 rounds, Khabib would have won at the hands of the judges and I think anyone who was watching would agree that it was a relatively one-sided affair.

Khabib is simply a much better fighter. Yet the controversy around the fight is that after the victory, Khabib Nurmagomedov and his crew were "guilty" of assaulting Conor's team. Dana White (the head of UFC) stated how upset he was about Khabib and then withheld his victory purse. He also later decided to fire Khabib's teammate who was involved in the fracas. Khabib then threatened to leave the UFC if his friend is fired, violating his contract with them.

I'm getting too long winded so i will give my prediction.

Khabib isn't going anywhere. There is entirely too much money wrapped up in this and the fact that we havent really heard much about it after it ended suggests to me that this is simply a build-up to a rematch, where we will all pile in like lemmings to watch it again despite the fact that it is entirely likely exactly the same thing will happen again. UFC will make 100 million, Conor will make three to four million and Khabib will also make three to four million and in the meantime the only real losers in the entire transaction will be us, the viewers.

You see, UFC is banking a LOT on the mouth on that Irish fella, and to get upset with an opponent of his for essentially doing what he does all the time would be absurd and that is why I think everyone has stopped talking about it. 50-Cent came out of the woodwork to offer Khabib 2 million to come over to Bellator, where he would truly be out of his element and surrounded by people that don't stand a chance against the undefeated Russian.

So, in summary here is what is going to happen and is my prediction

  • Khabib is not leaving UFC, neither is his teammate, this will all happen quietly though
  • Khabib will be paid his purse and probably some "hush" money on the side
  • McGregor will STFU for a little while and then start running his mouth circa 4 months from now in order to promote the rematch
  • Bellator will remain relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things

I think the post-match events were a huge disgrace to the sport in general. A champion shouldn't act like Khabib did, whatever McGregor did. The victory already proves a point, no need to prove anything more after the fact. What McGregor said and did before the match was a disgrace and Khabib just went along with it. Most people who aren't into MMA already see pro MMA fighters as meatheads and this only proves their prejudice for them.

I doubt this is a publicity stunt, because it's such a hit on the sport. If Dana would rather profit marginally from a rematch by staining the reputation of the sport he has been building up for a long time, it just seems low. Despite how he has been making money off of McGregor's antics.

I think your predictions are close to what will end up happening. Because in the end Dana won't want to lose either of these fighters. So either Dana is in on it all or then Dana will eventually swallow his pride for profit. I guess in the end it's just the same difference.

spot on. Myself and many of my friends who are avid fans of the sport always cheer against trash talkers who have turned this sport into the WWE. The promos are more important than the matches. Not to mention the fact that ACTUAL WWE fighters are given matches they do not deserve simply because of the hype (Lesner was a bit of an exception but the entire CM Punk thing was just plain dumb - and we all ate it up too)

Fighters like Chael Sonnen (probably spelled that wrong) getting a title fight against Anderson Silva when at the time he wasn't even in the top 10 is completely unfair to the 9 other guys in line. Why did he get this fight? Because he is good on the microphone and was talking trash.

I'm carrying on too much.... i should have just said that I agree with everything you wrote :)

have to know the mentality of Dagestan people before trying to judge Khabib. they are tough proud mountainous people, honor means a lot more to them than money, some silly UFC career, often even than life itself. especially when the honor of family members is concern, especially of parents.

whole disgrace is on the Connor's manager or teammate (or whoever he is) for reportedly saying some offensive things about Khabib's father (about religion too). he was in fact too lucky to get off so easily. entire responsibility lies on him and Connor's team - they have been provoking (no doubt intentionally) opponent even before the match.

come to think of it, I won't be at all surprised if the whole thing was pre-arranged, done purposely and calculatingly, knowing the inevitable reaction (or rather over-reaction) of Khabib.

BTW does the Yellow Press bother to publish the fact that some of Dagestan people have even suggested to invite Connor there and treat him as a valued guest of honor as an apology for the whole event?
"Volk Han invites Conor McGregor to Dagestan"
I guess not, because this is not in the mainstream media news - just briefly mentioned in some MMA forum only.

as for your conclusion / prediction ("Khabib is not leaving UFC") - that's too obvious! the whole UFC thing is a huge business in gigantic entertainment industry. so, as saying goes: "Show Must Go On !" :D

Am glad am not paranoid thinking it may have been staged just to create buzz enough for a big money rematch

that's always a possibility but i don't think Khabib is a good enough actor to pull that off :)

It was a boring fight... I know Khabib is more skilled on the ground (obviously) but that just isn't fun to watch... UFC is the last sport that viewers have the opportunity to watch something brutal that isn't safe and isn't controlled by a long list of regulations and rules. At the end of the day it is two men or women beating the hell out of each other and there is something intriguing about that.

When someone just cuddles on the floor and rolls around it just isn't fun for your average viewer like myself.

I agree when you said the only losers of the fight are the viewers because I felt like the most exciting part of the night was heavy weight bout before the Mcgregor fight and the Khabib antics after the fight.

I also agree that the UCF isn't going to let either of those fighters go anywhere because of how much money they bring in.

Khabib will kick his ass again...

All this is a great business scheme, of course they have to punish those involved but they will not be exemplary punishments.
I do not know, maybe the same UFC wanted more rating hehehe.

a fight that never ends

Awful post...you contradict yourself, didn't check your spelling, made mistakes in facts and made some really daa predictions...But congrats you made 50 bucks out of it...why am I being an asshole? Because this post doesn't deserve 50 bucks...
