NFL Stars could dominate World Rugby Tweets ESPN NFL analysis - I DONT THINK SO!

in #sports6 years ago

ESPN senior American football writer Kevin Van Valkenburg has attracted vitriol after declaring that the USA would dominate world rugby if the NFL's top talent were to be made available.

In a tweet, Van Valkenburg said: "Briefly watched college rugby today while getting a hair cut b/c they wouldn't turn on golf.

"Conclusion: If you gave me a year, Urban Meyer, Zeke Elliott, JJ Watt, Leonard Foutnette & an NFL practice squad, the US would so thoroughly dominate rugby, other countries would quit."

This tweet from Van Valkenburg is one of the most laughable and arrogant tweets i have ever read, for starters he was basing his judgement on watching College Rugby in America which would be of the standard of local 4th grade in New Zealand, Australia, England and many other countries. Secondly he clearly fails to understand the intricacies of the game of Rugby and what is required to be successful, you cant just rely on being a great athlete, im not sure he is aware that you also have to play continuous offense and defense in Rugby and be both a great anaerobic and aerobic athlete to make it to the elite level.

American kids who grow up playing American Football are hardwired to run the exact play that is drafted by the coach at all times, it would take a few generations of kids playing from a young age to pick up the overall skills of Rugby and would require coaches from Rugby nations to be running these programs. No doubt in the world that the NFL has some of the best athletes on the planet but only a few would be suite to Rugby just only a few athletes from Rugby and Rugby League would be capable of playing in the NFL they are two completely different sports. Stick to commentating on NFL i say Kevin or do some research before you make idiotic tweets.

There will always be some attributes of all sports that translate well across different sporting codes, but to expect people to immediately cross over and dominate is either naive or very arrogant.

Well said mate!

They are two different sports, maybe running backs could be great in rugby but football is too specialized, too many positions that are not there in rugby, you cannot do this exchange a QB but maybe a wide receiver or running back can be great.

But the same can be said for Rugby players, they wouldn't make good NFL QBs but maybe good line backers.

Yep 100% agree with that!
