Peter Sagan Is Champion - Again

Third time lucky, Peter Sagan from Slovakia has managed to become a road race world champion again. For the third time in a row which has never happened before.

Last ten kilometers were a full strength affair for every cyclist involved in the leading group. There were several brief spurts of French, Italian and Austrian riders going ahead of the main group. They were all caught.

The group of around twenty riders came to the finishing kilometer together. Then two sprint specialists went to the head and performed their duel - Peter Sagan of Slovakia and home favourite, Norwegian Alexander Kristoff.

In the end, Sagan managed to prevail for no more than an inch. To quote live coverage of the race at The Guardian:

Peter Sagan wins his third consecutive world road race title!

Sagan pips Kristoff on the line! By only a few inches. That was a photo finish, but Sagan just about got there ahead of Kristoff! Michael Matthews, the Australian, comes in third.
