The Indian Premier League Auction will be held in the early part of 2018 and the rules for the auction have been released by the IPL Governing Council. Also you can watch the IPL Auction Live Streaming and on TV around the world.

The IPL auction rules are out. Every IPL team can retain up to five players from the previous season of the tournament and this can be done in two ways - either through a straightforward retention or by using the right to match card.

Not more than three players can be retained beforehand and not more than three players can be picked during the auction using the right to match catch. A right to match card, which has been used in previous IPL auctions, allows teams to pick a player they had in the previous year after they have been picked by another side in the auction.

If a team retains three players from the previous season before the auction, they can use only two RTM cards in the auction. Following rules will be applicable on the retention policy:

  1. Maximum number of 3 Capped Indian players.
  2. Maximum number of 2 Overseas players.
  3. Maximum number of 2 Uncapped Indian players.

Players who were released from Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals and went to Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions, can be retained/RTMed by their respective former teams. The others can be retained/RTMed by their respective new teams.

CSK can retain five out of:

MS Dhoni, R Ashwin, Baba Aparajith, Andrew Tye, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ankush Bains, Dwayne Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Irfan Pathan & Ishwar Pandey

RR can retain five out of:

Ajinkya Rahane, Ankit Sharma, Rajat Bhatia, Steven Smith, James Faulkner & Dhawal Kulkarni

The rest of the players who were in the Rajasthan and Chennai sides will be retained by the teams which picked them last year.

The IPL Auction will be streamed live online and will be telecast on TV as well. Indian viewers can watch it on Star Sports.

I will release the other information around the IPL Auction Live Streaming as we get closer to the IPL Auction date.

I find it fascinating how the Indian franchises value (or dont value) some of the Aussie players. Sometimes it looks like they just throwing darts at a dartboard!

I suppose it's to do with multiple factors and marketability is also one of them. Also availability throughout the tournament plus team balance with respect to the four foreign-player rule. Smith & Warner are much sought after but there's also this feeling that Australian cricketers don't treat T20s too well as can be seen from their international record.

I agree but I think the Big Bash is probably the 2nd biggest T20 domestic competition behind the IPL so you'd think the talent scouts would be having a close look at it. Any player coming through with some spin or slow ball variations or can hit big on the slower/lower decks should be on the radar for sure.

Definitely is the second biggest T20 tournament - which is why, the likes of Chris Lynn, Adam Zampa and even Mitchell Johnson are so much sought-after. Anyone you think should be there and isn't getting the opportunity? Finch, Warner, Henriques, Head, Lynn, Maxwell, Stoinis - all these guys are a part of the IPL and in the Aussie T20I squad.

I'll have to have a closer look at who misses out this time around. Reckon guys like Behrendorff would be tough to pass over this time around.

I think the likes of Andrew Tye got picked up for the IPL even before they played for their national side.

Ben Cutting did fairly well too and got a fair number of chances.

Tye was a standout BBL performer before he got regular chances in the IPL despite having been in the IPL before that. Yep, Cutting has been in and around the IPL teams too. Think Windies and Australia are very well-represented in the IPL.

Infact I remember Kevin Pietersen imploring the ECB to give a window to English players to play in the IPL.

"You've got world-class players who are sitting in England now wanting to play the IPL when you've got some second-rate Australians getting gigs here."

Ouch, that was wicked from KP!

Gosh, can't believe we're inching closer to the IPL auction. So much to think about. I hope my favourites Mumbai Indians retain the players I'd like to retain!! :D

Mumbai Indians eh? Rich owners et al ;) Who are your favourite players you want retained?

Suppose Rohit and Jasprit will definitely be retained. Pandyas. Probably Pollard too. Harbhajan, may be. Anyone else?

maybe Jos Butler - he seemed to be a good cheer leader when MI won this year :D

Ha ha, smart :) But on a serious note, might prefer Pollard over him given his IPL experience.

Yes Pollard's fielding has been pretty superb. What do you think of Parthiv Patel being retained? Too hit and miss?

Nope, don't think he has a chance in the top five. But he will get picked by some or the other team in the auction. Top keeper and can bat.
