This was the song that came to my mind as I watched the super Eagles of Nigeria decimated the indomitable lions of Cameroon.

The Super Eagles I saw today was a team set up to play defensively (with two holding midfielders) and then to play on the counter which also meant for them to be very clinical in front of goal which they did to my satisfaction.

It was typical of the Cameroonians to come out in full force in the first fifteen minutes of the match having watched them do the same at the just concluded FIFA confederations cup in Russia then eventually tire out as the game went on and this played to the advantage of the Super Eagles of Nigeria who had speedsters in their attack and this allowed them to stretch the defense of Cameroonians with the creative expertise of captain John Mikel Obi they were in no way a match for the Nigerians.

Concentrating on the defensive aspect of Nigeria’s game, I was surprised at the way the two center backs handled the game with maturity, read every pass, crosses and their communication with the goalkeeper who by the way did not have much to do due to the profligacy of the Cameroonians in front of goal was superb.

The only sour note from Nigeria’s match would be that they are in dire need of another left back. If the Cameroonians had a William or a Neymar then we would probably not be talking about a 4-0 score line instead we would be talking about how many goals were conceded from the left hand side because to be frank Elderson Echijeile is just not good enough.

On the second leg which would be on the 4th of August which is in three days’ time I think this would give the Cameroonians enough time to take a look at today’s match and know where they went wrong and also enable them put their house in order though I still see the Nigerian’s taking home a victory in Yaoundé which would make them qualify for the world cup in Russia.
