The Olympic Stadium in Rome (Stadio Olimpico di Roma in Italian) is a multipurpose stadium, but mainly dedicated to the practice of football, located in the city of Rome, capital of the Lazio region and Italy. It serves as the usual headquarters for the A.S. Rome and the S.S. Lazio, whose supporters occupy the south and north stands respectively. It was the main venue of the 1960 Olympic Games and the final of the 1990 Soccer World Cup.

Designed in 1927 and originally called “Stadio dei Cipressi” (in Spanish: 'Stadium of the Cypresses'), it was designed and built within the framework of the project to create an authentic sports city that would be called “Mussolini Forum” (and which after the war was renamed "Italic Forum"). Construction work began in 1928 and ended in 1937 under the supervision of architect Luigi Walter Moretti.

In December 1950 the quarries were opened for the reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium to adapt it to the capacity of one hundred thousand people (for this reason «Stadio dei Centomila», as it was called until 1960) with a view to the XVII Olympics. The stadium was inaugurated on May 17, 1953 with the match between the national soccer teams of Italy and Hungary.

During the 1960 Olympics the stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and athletic competitions.

To host the 1990 World Cup, the Olympic was completely demolished and rebuilt in reinforced concrete; the curves were approximated to the field in nine meters. The arquibancadas were integrally protected by a white cover in Arabic style and blue plastic seats and two new curtains were placed. At the end of the work, the official capacity was 72,698 spectators. Here the UEFA Champions League final was played on May 27, 2009 between FC Barcelona and Manchester United, with the Spanish team winning 2-0.
