PDGA Pro World Championships - Round 1

The 2017 PDGA Pro World Championship Disc Golf tournament is happening this week in Augusta, Georgia. The men's open field comprises of 165 of the world's best disc golfers all battling to be crowned the 2017 World Champion. The players are competing on two courses this year: W.R. Jackson, located at the International Disc Golf Center in Wildwood State Park, and the new Marine/Navy Disc Golf Course, located in Fort Gordon.

For this event, the players were split into two pools: A pool and B pool. Each pool will be playing a different course each day and will end up playing a total of four rounds, two on each course. Round one is wrapping up now and most of the cards have come in, so we can really begin to see how the next few rounds are going to look and which players we will need to keep our eyes on going into round two.

The A pool played their opening round on the W.R. Jackson Memorial Course. The hot round so far, for both pools, definitely goes to Johne McCray, who managed to finish with an astounding round, shooting -12 (56), giving him a nice three-point lead going into round two!

Just behind Johne McCray are Gerogia native Cam Todd, Chris Dickerson from Tennessee, and Michael Johansen from North Carolina, all shooting -9 (59).

Rounding out the top 8 for the B pool are defending World Champion Ricky Wysocki, Simon Lizotte of Germany, Gregg Barsby from California, and four-time World Champion Paul McBeth, all shooting -8 (58).

Tomorrow, the A pool players will be playing on the new Marine/Navy course  at Fort Gordon.

The B pool played round one on the new Marine/Navy course at Fort Gordon.

The hot round from the B pool came from Codey Faircloth out of Alabama, shooting -9 (59), which puts him tied for 2nd place overall.

Just behind Codey were Justin Jernigan of North Carolina, Kyle Webster of Missouri, and Matt House of Oklahoma, each shooting -7 (61).

Rounding out the top 8 from the B pool are Landon Knight of Texas and Justin Lammers of Wisconsin shooting -6 (62) and Phil Arthur of Georgia and Christopher Watson of California shooting -5 (63).

This is quickly shaping up to be an exciting world championship event. We should be expecting to see a lot of action tomorrow as players continue to improve their scores and gain position going into the weekend.

The weather in Augusta could play a major factor tomorrow as isolated thunderstorms are being forecast for mid-afternoon and into the evening.
