in #sport8 years ago

Cristiano Ronaldo has shown his compassionate side once again by inviting the widow of former AC Milan and Fiorentina striker Stefano Borgonovo to Sunday's Euro 2016 final in Saint-Denis, France.

Borgonovo died in 2013 as a result of the progressive neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Following her husband's death, Chantal Borgonovo set up the Stefano Borgonovo Foundation to raise awareness of the disease, and Ronaldo is reported to have been moved after hearing their story through former Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Upon hearing of the invite, Borgonovo expressed her surprise and gratitude for Ronaldo's gesture, per Vaishali Bhardwaj of the Evening Standard:

I could not believe my ears when Jorge Mendes called me the other day and told me that Ronaldo wants me to come to Paris.

Cristiano and Jorge have always been very close to my family and I am happy and grateful that they continue to remember my husband and support us in our fight against ALS. I am looking forward to the Euro Final and to discussing the Foundation’s efforts with the football community present.
