Who is Devon Modster, the UCLA QB tasked with filling in for Josh Rosen?

in #sport7 years ago

A little less than 2 hours before kickoff of the UCLA-Utah game, it was announced that Josh Rosen, he of the ambiguous injury for the past week, did not make the trip to Salt Lake City. The Bruins quarterback had suffered a concussion during Saturday’s loss to Washington. The injury was only made clear in the moments prior to kickoff of Utah.

Who, then, will take Rosen’s place? A freshman from Mission Viejo, Calif., named Devon Modster.

If you stuck it out for the second half of the Washington game, you would have gotten a glimpse at Modster, a Mission Viejo native who proved himself more than capable in his short sampling against the Huskies. He completed 7 of 12 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. His only other game experience came in the waning moments of a blowout win over Hawaii in Week 2, when he tossed 3 passes and completed 1 for 5 yards.

At his media availability on Tuesday night, UCLA offensive coordinator said of Modster: “He walked onto the field on Saturday and I asked, ‘How are ya doing?’ and he said, ‘I’m great!’ And he had a nice smile and I said, ‘If you’re great, I’m great.’ and I gave him a screen to get him a completion.”

That calm will be needed on Friday night, in a critical matchup for bowl eligibility. UCLA needs to win two of its next four to earn bowl eligibility, with Friday’s game against Utah, next week hosting Arizona State, and the season finale with Cal providing the best opportunities to do so.
