There is a famous Christian prayer (by American theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr) that I grew up with, on a wooden plaque on in our family home, which clarifies this distinction for me:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
