Tribal Christians in India often face double accusation: "Maoists and anti-national". And they are treated as peripheral people. Then on top of that, they can also be killed by the Maoists themselves on suspicion of working for the police.
The outlawed, armed operatives of the Maoist movement are dreaded for their strike capability in central India. And they had previously attacked and accused Pentecostal Christian pastor, Rev. Abraham Tigga Topno – man of peace and great community person – of working for the police as informer sometime in 2016. They then spared his life upon learning that he's just a pastor and not police informer.
In the morning hour of May 2, 2018, the body of the pastor was found beheaded on the shore of a reservoir. He and his driver were passing through Belgara village in the thick forests surrounding the state capital, Ranchi, when around 25 masked men whom police believe to be Maoists, pulled the pastor and the driver out, blindfolded them and tied their hands with a stiff rope. Then they cut the pastor's throat and released the driver unhurt. The murder is believed to have taken place in the late hours of 1 May, 2018.
Abraham Topno was 46 and had served in the area for nearly 25 years as a man of God; he's survived by his wife and their adopted son Aman Christo.
