THE CHRISTIAN SUFFERING

1 Peter 4:12-13
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

REFLECTIONS:

1. While we might not endure physical persecution, it is unlikely that we will escape verbal or social or spiritual persecutions. Peter said that such hatred and persecutions are normal. The early Christians experienced worse cases at their time and so may we. Remember Jesus warned us that Hard Times Will Come.

2. Just as gold is tested by fire, so our faith is tested by persecution, trial times, period of hardship etc. Just as God blessed Job after his trials, so He will bless us. It is said that first comes the cross, then comes the crown. So don't be surprised when you find yourself facing ridicules, ostracism, abuse, etc. because of Christ.

3. Jesus taught us to rejoice in our suffering because our reward is great in heaven and the faithful prophets were also persecuted. Paul found glory in tribulations because tribulations produce perseverance, which in turn produce character and hope. James taught us that trial periods ought to be an occasion for joy because testing of our faith produces patience and patience help us become perfect and complete.
