Datta Maata 86: Realization of the Self
Each and everybody have their own experience. We see all the things with our eyes. Even if our eyes are wide open, when our mind is not focused, we cannot see the object that is right in front. This is because we have closed our inner eye. We are seeing somewhere else. We cannot see that which is happening right in front of us even with our eyes wide open. Hence, the conclusion here is that eye is not enough to see. We also need mind along with it. The same is the case with listening.
Also, we need the energy to distinguish whether the eye is watching or not. That is the atma shakthi (energy of the self). Hence, to see an object, the eye and the mind play equal roles. When the mind is impure, a man sees the objects just like the way his mind shows him. For instance, as soon as scientist sees a star, he tries to measure its size with the help of a telescope. A poet sees the beauty of the star. A painter sees the colors of the star. A devotee sees the star to be a demigod. In this way, each and every one has their own vision. Out of these, how can we say which one is the truth? This is tricky question. Isn’t it? There is no rule that you and me see alike. Hence, we need someone who has the capability to decide the truth for us. What is the true world? In order to get the answer for this question, we must observe the mind and not the world.
The mind identifies if the eye is able to see or not. Likewise, the atma chaithanya (the life force within) identifies whether the mind is working or not. As you see, these are interlinked. The senses do their job. But, the mind is like a witness. We can discuss about this later. The atma chaithanya illumines all by itself. There is no necessity to take the help of another object to identify this. We must see the world by going to the level of the atma chaithanya. Then, we will see the world which is devoid of the mind’s virtues and impurities. That is the real vision of the world which is the ultimate truth. It is the atma darshanam (Realization of the self). In order to achieve this realization, it is not enough to have eyes alone. We need to possess the mind that can absorb this. I pray Lord Datta to bless you all with that atma darshanam. The mind must also help to see an object.
The same is the case with listening. We might be listening blindly but we cannot register it because our mind is somewhere. We keep on listening and finally say that we could not understand anything. This is because our mind is somewhere else. We are not focusing our mind along with the ears over there. Hence, any duration of listening will only be like listening to some sound. That is fine. We listen for a while when the mind is present, laugh and once again the mind goes astray. We keep on listening to the spiritual discourses but we cannot understand even a bit of it. Focus your mind there when you see or listen.
