Demands of the spiritual path: The scribe's wisdom increases wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become wise. Ben Sira 38:24

The sapiential book written by the master Ben Sira teaches us that wisdom is the supreme and the most perfect science, and the one that directs all the others, the science that brings man closest to God.
But whoever wants to become wise or a doctor of wisdom, has to know that this spiritual path has important demands; no one becomes truly an expert in the science of God through manual crafts but through reflection, study, and the development of intelligence through the progressive thought. Due to this problem, the teacher of wisdom intelligently stated: "The scribe's wisdom increases wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become wise" Ben Sira 38:24.
The grace of God, that is, the perfecting of the spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) in the heart of man, is something that is beyond human efforts but that comes when man is prepared to receive it. It is very difficult for a person who is exclusively concerned with everyday problems, what others might say, or with accumulating wealth through work, to receive it. As the Lord Jesus said, many are called but few are chosen. To achieve the spiritual love, the love projected to the whole creation of God, through the fear of God is the most excellent goal that man can achieve.
The doctors of wisdom, Ben Sira reflected, have been very outstanding people throughout the history of the people of Israel, from Joseph in the Book of Genesis with his ability to divine dreams, as well as King Solomon who dispensed a famous justice and govern with great intelligence. Wisdom is a luminous guide for men, reflected Ben Sira, and when men forget about it, that is when societies enter into crisis, like a hidden treasure, wisdom is there to be discovered by men.
