"The manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good", 1 Corinthians 12:7. Exegesis, meaning, understanding and commentary of the bible verse.
Paul in his letter to the Corinthians teach us about the spirit and the spiritual gifts:
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are differents kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the spirit is given for the common good.
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines."1 Corinthias 12: 4-11.
The spirit is the origin of the gifts: "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth", John 4:24.
The spirit is the substance of God explains Thomas Aquinas. The substance of God is the wisdom itself, "talk about god is talk about wisdom", explain Thomas Aquinas.
"The same Spirit distributes them", 1 Corinthians 12:4; explain Paul, the wisdom is the source of the gifts. The Father, the son and the Holy Spirit are one wisdom, explain the scholastic philosophy. The wisdom is the science of God, the science of the truth, the firs and ultimate causes.
Some perfections are proper of God, like ommnipotence or eternity, but when the qualities of God are transmissible to men these are supernatural gifts.
The gifts of the spirit can be: gift of wisdom, gift of prophecy (listen, meditate, decide), gift of knowledge, gift of discernment. Paul is describing to us the greatest gifts: "But earnestly desire the greater gifts", 1 Corinthians 12:31. In other words, the gifts that are most striking, for the edification of the community.
The goal of the spiritual gifts is not happiness, happiness is a selfish desire. The gifts respond to the desire for the good, the goal of the gifts are the common good, communion, the eternal life (contemplative activity) and the sanctity (fruits of the spirit). Living the spiritual gifts is living ethically. The kingdom of God is the dominion of the mercy, the empire of wisdom, the govenment of the prophecy, the reign of the perseverance.
