The cetarea A Redonda

Very close to A Guarda we find a cetarea that has been preserved quite well, despite the passage of time.

Its name is due to its circular shape and we find it a few kilometers from the beginning of today's stage. We are doing the Camino de Santiago Portuguese on the Coast and this is a curiosity that we do not want to miss.

A cetarea is a natural nursery. Before modern fish farms, some crustaceans were raised in captivity in these buildings near the sea.

There are several cetareans in this Galician area. They create a certain curiosity and that is why a route has been developed close to A Guarda, crossing several of them in an entertaining 4 km route.

We stopped for a moment and toured the A Round round. In this construction they raised a lot of seafood that they later exported.

These shellfish nurseries were built in ancient times and used natural pools that they used to stagnate seawater. The livelihoods for crustaceans were obtained from constant renewal with seawater.

This seafood probably had a much more genuine and tasty taste than the current fish farms

Here, the lobster was raised, among others, which is one of the most valued and appreciated species for its culinary value. From here, they were exported to many points of the Iberian Peninsula and abroad. Breeders earned a good living. As these crustaceans are highly valued and well paid, there are many whales on the Galician coast.

One of the most interesting cetariats is the A Round round cetarea is named for its circular shape. It was built at the end of the 19th century, specifically in 1895. As it is logical, for its construction it was necessary to wait until it was low tide and also that the sea was calm.

A natural granite pool was used for construction and reinforced with cement and bricks in some areas.

A natural pool was created where the interior was roofed and cells were made. Here they raised the crustaceans.

Everything was not always perfect, because on many occasions, an important storm could damage this construction and had to be reformed.

The operation of the cetarea is very simple. During the high tide the sea water enters and renews that of the pool. This allows animals to be alive without the need for supplements.

Lobsters, crabs, crabs, and even shrimp, among other species, were raised in the whales.

After a while of walking through this curious crustacean hatchery we started our way to the Oya Monastery. But that, I will tell you on another occasion. Until then...

Jejejej 😊
