The Joy of Classics (34)

in #spanish7 years ago (edited)

Hi dear Steemians,

Wow! 21 days without posting!
Sorry, I've been busy with the soundtrack for two documentaries and I had no time to talk about my beloved classics and their joys!
So today we are going to talk about Johann Krieger (1651-1735), a German Baroque composer, who wrote this who wrote this delightful piece, a Bourrée in A minor.

He was a prolific composer of church music who could published several of his works, and others only survived in manuscript. But during the Seven Years' War, many of his works were lost during a fire in Zittau in 1757. It is a shame, because I would say that this composer could live up to the greatest of this period, G.F.Handel or even J.S.Bach.

The structure of this piece is quite simple.
A four-bar phrase repeats itself with two different dynamics, first with "mezzo forte" and then with "piano".
After that, during the next eight-measure phrase, there is a small modulation to C Major, but it immediately returns to A minor.
If you look carefully at the score, a very contrapuntal writing is used from the first two bars to the end, with a combination of two eighth notes and a quarter note, and a dotted quarter note at the cadences at the end of each phrase.

There are two very important aspects to consider in interpreting this style of music:

  • The tempo must be very rigorous.
  • There can not be any type of rubato, nor any kind of romantic affectation.

Keep in mind that this is a type of dance, and it has to be interpreted as such!

You can see it in this video.
And I hope you like it!

Hola queridos steemians,
