ORVIUM (ICO): Blockchain platform for scientific publishing in the digital age.

in #spanish6 years ago

INTRODUCTION.

In 1989, a British scientist from CERN (European Organization for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, Tim Berners-Lee, created the World Wide Web (WWW). For the year 1993the basic software of the WWW was made public, in accordance with the open nature of CERN. It made the following version available through an open license guaranteeing its dissemination and applications.

Initially this software was designed and developed to meet the demand for automatic information exchange between scientists from universities and institutes around the world. Since then, the WWW has become indispensable in everyday life, far exceeding its initial expectations.

In this ecosystem, the scientific publishing industry evolved and adapted rapidly to the current changes. This industry has managed new technologies to increase revenues and profits, but its business model has not evolved. Instead of leaning more towards academic research, it has become more limited, keeping people informed behind paywalls. This model also introduced biases and delays in publication, barriers to the dissemination of science and left researchers and research institutions increasingly frustrated with the status quo.

In view of this, the limitations of the current publication model directly affect scientific research with negative consequences for the entire community. Science drastically changes the way we live, communicate and work, including changing the length and quality of life itself, making life easier, because it helps man to study and criticize ethics, aesthetics, education and justice, create cultures and improve human conditions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM.

Due to these needs, the scientific publishing industry was born and quickly became one of the largest profit producers in the world. The top five publishers make up between 50% and 70% of all publications, and their profit margins have been reported to exceed those of companies such as Google, Amazon and Manzana. In 2015, the global market for scientific, technical and medical products (STM) is estimated at $25 billion.

Currently, the publishing model has a number of problems affecting community research, including high publication costs; copyright held by publishers rather than authors; long, opaque and often biased peer review and publication by reviewers; lack of rewards and recognition for reviewers; and the proliferation of journals.

In recent decades, several initiatives have sought to improve this situation.
However, these initiatives have been insufficient to reverse market inefficiencies and barriers.
Currently, thanks to the development of artificial intelligence technologies and the latest generation of block chains, for decentralized storage of large amounts of data. The development of the ORVIUM platform provides a public, traceable and reliable record of the research publication flow. With a continuous and rigorous review of the members of the scientific community, and with financial and reputational rewards for the reviewers.

As a consequence. Orvium increases the production and validation of research, allowing the research community to determine the validity and robustness of published work. By separating the usual routines of the publishing industry with regard to plagiarism, ownership of ideas and registration, Orvium helps to retain control of its work and its potential economic benefits, and enables publishers to publish at optimal costs of publication and access. Orvium's ultimate goal is to become the premier publishing platform, while bringing the benefits of science back to society.
Orvium uses a unique and seamless integration of cutting-edge technologies: Etherum blockchain and smart contracts, as well as decentralized storage solutions, large analytical data, and cloud computing to extend a platform for processing, validating, and disseminating research data and results. In addition, it displays the following characteristics:

  • Instantaneous verification of existence. The texts are available from the moment they are sent to Orvium.
  • Copyright and licenses are the exclusive and transferable properties of the authors. Authorship retains control of your work and its potential economic benefits.
  • Unbeatable publication costs and access. Prices are not conditioned by monopolistic or oligopolistic market structures.
  • Efficient structures for the creation of decentralized magazines with low maintenance and operating costs.
  • It seamlessly integrates research data and results.
  • Continuous and transparent peer reviews. The world of research is faced with the ability to publicly determine the validity and robustness of research.
  • Public recognition and financial reward for reviewers.
  • Freedom to subscribe to magazines. No subscription model to the journal is applied.
  • It accommodates grey literature and its validation.
  • Clear calculations are made of quality metrics, such as impact factor and quality of peer review.
  • It eliminates current "predatory" practices and conflicts related to plagiarism, ownership and registration.
  • Social platform.
In addition, Orvium is based on open source principles, so all software developed by Orvium is, and always will be, open source.

BUSINESS MODEL THAT RETURNS BENEFITS TO SCIENCE.

Compared to other publishing industries, The ORVIUM platform has successfully achieved low costs and publications that benefit the community.

Most of the research is funded by governments and once the results are ready, the publishers of publications purchase them for free. The editors pay the editors who analyze the quality of writing and improve it as appropriate, but most of the editorial workload, checking the scientific validity, evaluating the experiments and judging the scientific value of the research, is carried out through the review process. This workload is borne by the scientists who work on a voluntary basis; their salaries are normally those paid by the government and the research institutes. Finally, publishers sell the product to government-funded institutional and university libraries, to be read by scientists, who, in a collective sense, created the product in the first place. This outrageous economic model, often called the triple pay system, has been criticised by numerous scientists and research institutions as a perverse and unnecessary business and public scandal.

As a result, Orvium plans to end this drain of resources by offering a fair model that minimizes costs and ensures that authors and research institutions retain the integrity of copyright and licensing ownership. In addition, Orvium provides funding for the scientific community and civil society.

MAXIMISE SCIENTIFIC VALIDATION AND COLLABORATION.

At Orvium, you bet that independent peer reviews are an excellent way to validate scientific results. However, we are aware that it has biases and problems.

Orvium implements innovative integration between the block chain and large data that will leverage an unprecedented framework to detect and avoid most of these prejudices and problems.

Orvium tries to go much further. Share the research data, code, etc., which you have translated into results and published conclusion in a manuscript that will clearly improve scientific validation and possible scientific collaboration.
Our vision is to enable the entire community to have access not only to the results of the study, but also to the study itself.

Incorporate society into the scientific process and its evolution
With Orvium, society as a whole can learn from and participate in the way science works. Among its objectives, Orvium aims to open science to society. To provide a completely new way of involving the public in the scientific process and its evolution. Orvium will underpin the use of a disruptive business model focused on scientists and broadening the participation and involvement of society.

MARKET OVERVIEW

Market Opportunity
By 2015, an estimated 9 million researchers were active. They published between 1.8 and 2 million articles a year, which together produced more than 2.5 billion full-text downloads from STM publishers' websites, plus perhaps another 400 million from other sites. Increasing by 3 to 3.5% per year and without considering open access models that represent a significant percentage.

These figures alone constitute a great market opportunity, but there are a few factors that make this opportunity even more relevant. The current scientific system is one of the most lucrative in the world.

STM's publishing market was estimated at $25 billion and it is almost impossible to find more accurate numbers as they are not made public by the parties involved. Libraries and universities around the world are typically required to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) on the costs of their contracts with publishers.
