Black Mirror: Be Right Back: Más allá de los caracteres. - Further than the keyboard.
In our society it is very common for the majority of us being part (of at least watching it) a very specific situation: a guy is hypnotized by his phone and does not realize that a girl is talking to him. It is raining, she has two cups of coffee and he is not able to see her girlfriend as the technology has taken the spotlight. Sadly, that's how we relate with other people every day; that's the amount of attention we pay to the people around us.
Duele. – It hurts.
With this situation Black Mirror's second season started, a TV show that surprises us with every episode thanks to Charlie Brooker —who is its creator and scriptwriter— that does not care about anything and criticizes our society, attitudes, behaviours and our 'humanity' that turns into self-destruction. The first episode of this season is called 'Be Right Back', and it tells us Martha's story, who is a young artist that has to face her boyfriend's death. He was an addict to the social media, just like the majority of our society, he was distracted but it didn't make him a bad person, so his absence does that Martha decides to get a 'special service'. She knows about this service because an annoying friend tells her, and it allows people that just lost a beloved person to 'keep in touch' with him virtually. The program gets the person's information by what he has posted on the Internet. This sounds creppy as hell, I know. However, this stange service has another tool that is still in beta, and as the normal version is not enough Martha decides to take it.
Las redes sociales. – The social media.
This episode shows us how the social media corrupt us to the point that we don't pay attention to the people we care about. The message that is sent by Be Right Back is not that shocking as in 'The National Anthem' neither obvious like in '15 Million Merits', which is not negative but does that a lot of people don't realize what is beyond the screen, however, the people who pays attention receive what Brooker is trying to say. Maybe while I was watching the episode I didn't believe it was the best thing that the world has seen, but without a doubt in my mind its goal is completed.
Reflexiona. – Think about it.
As I have said in my previous Black Mirror's reviews there are two things that I look in this series: its story and its message. In Be Right Back both were excellent with a powerful moral that make us to think about Internet's usage:
Is there a limit when we post private stuff on the Internet?
How real is what we 'live' on the Internet?
Do our relationships, friendships and bonds rely on the social media?
And the most important question: what is our limit, where are we stopping? Does privacy have a limit? You need to remember that behind the screen there is a human being.
Sólido. - Lit.
All this questions are asked in this amazing episode, which tells us a reality and shows that something horrible can happen in a near future. In conclusion, 'Be Right Back' is a very good Black Mirror episode, a TV series that decided to go and never stop since it started and it keeps telling us heartbreaking messages in every episode. It is a must-see in the television without a doubt.
