"THE LEVEL OF SUFFERING OF THE VENEZUELANS IS ALREADY UNSTOPPABLE, THE INFLATION IS DESTROYING THE COUNTRY COMPLETELY"
The intensified economic crisis in Venezuela has forgiven few among its population of more than 30 million inhabitants. The nation is experiencing, under some measures, an extraordinary period of hyperinflation with an inflation rate of more than 800 percent during October. Next year, the IMF forecasts that consumer prices will skyrocket by more than 2,300 percent.
The hourly rate in a parking lot increased recently in the two hours it took a buyer to run errands. Venezuelans of all socioeconomic classes have resented the increase in costs amid a desperate shortage of food and medicine, the collapse of public services and the medical system, and a rampant crime. Their buying power has plummeted while salary increases have lagged behind prices.
The Venezuelan currency, the bolivar, is scarce and getting it has become one of the nightmares of daily life. People suffer long lines at ATMs to withdraw the maximum amount, equivalent to around 10 cents - just enough to pay for several trips by public bus. Some have begun to equate the tribulations of the nation with those of a country in times of war.
