Mistakes I've Made

in #spam2 years ago

It's been a while since I've posted on this channel. The reason for this is that I've been going through a number of changes in my perspective on life, and in looking back I can see the error of some of my choices. I have a very different attitude now about certain content that I've put out here on Steemit. That's the thing about the blockchain; you can't erase your mistakes, you can only own up to them and do your best moving forward. A permanent record of error is only to be expected; it is not the record that binds, but the error itself. And so I renounce this error of mine, with the intent of moving forward.

In the past I created some gif animations in response to spammers, providing the code to those gifs for others to use, with the condition that they credit my username. One of those gifs, pictured with this post, depicted a character vomiting out the word "Spam". At one point, when searching out examples of people who had referenced my username, I saw someone had used my gif in response to a spammer. There was a response to this post, in the form of a single word:

"Reviler".

At the time I remember thinking that this description was correct, but that I had no problem with it at all. I felt rather justified in expressing such revulsion against the spammers that annoy others on this site. I thought it was perfectly right to judge another in this way, and moreover to encourage and help others to do the same on my behalf.

I was wrong.

Now, I'm not going to go on at length as to why I feel that I was wrong in creating this gif. Let's just say I think there are better ways to discourage spam on this site. There is a difference between "revile" and "rebuke". The former allows no room for improvement, while the latter strongly encourages improvement. There are some other anti spam animations I've created that I hope fall into the latter category.

If you are someone who has used or intends to use the "puke" gif that I made, first off, I'm sorry for leading you in this direction. Secondly, please don't use it anymore. I understand if you find yourself disapproving of my change of heart on this issue, and of course you are free to do whatever you wish. But this is the position that I've chosen to take. It is my view that a part of standing behind the things you say or do is admitting when you are wrong.

I have some new gifs planned for responding to spammers, that use humour in a somewhat kinder fashion. Once I have completed these I will include a link in the comments below this post. Thanks for reading this and have yourself an awesome day.
